Used to be good, now terrible
BBC has lost its way and caved to advertising. App is now terrible, and triggers adverts to play when simply trying to scroll. Time for new management at the top of the organisation.

The BBC app’s gradual decay and degradation in functionality has been accompanied by a deep deterioration in the quality of its news content. Blunt propaganda of a dying empire has replaced what used to be a respectable, balanced news outlet. The BBC is today no different to CNN or Fox News, crassly showing its true colors and its now characteristic British warmongering agenda.
In todays world it’s not acceptable that a News App does not permit you to select text or word to have it spoken by the device or having the meaning checked using the dictionary. That is just simply unacceptable. Further, they are not honest. I say this because I red the full interview with Pep Guardula (Man City manager) and the the article was cutting interesting pieces away which generated a certain impression of the interview. It’s difficult to trust media organizations.
If I can not use LOOK UP in this app, there is no need for me to use this app, although I am not a low level English speaker, I still need to look up a lot of words when I read
This app shows adverts. Additionally, you can’t select text (to look up a word in the dictionary).
Last year, bbc “upgraded “ the app. This made it impossible to select text to find definitions of words or to look items up via Wikipedia or web searches. Submitted a problem report but never heard response. This app is useless for folks who want to look deeper into items in a news article
Bad user experience now. Popups like “login” or adds detract from reading news. Some articles impose a new scroll dynamic, where there is higher resistance/dampening and the scroll slows down to a halt much faster. If all of iOS scrolls at the same speed, we get used to it. This app should not feel like it has the right to scroll differently. All of these add to experiences that make you realize you don’t like the app instead of integrating the user seamlessly to the app’s content. I’ve tried it again after uninstalling it a year ago after the layout changes, popups, and scrolling irked me and it’s still the same. Be predictable and let us interface with your content. Stop imposing your own way to use our devices that’s different from the other 99% of the time we use our devices. You used to be able to open the app, tap a news article, swipe left or right to go to different articles, and be done. Now it’s open app, decline to log in, pick an article, close the ad, wait for the page to shift around as a webpage is opened within the app and styling changes, now you can scroll, now you recognize it scrolls weird…and now I’m ranting. This used to be my only news app and now have to move to others, and I still haven’t found a better one than what this was a few years ago. :(
Before updates, once opened BBC NEWS used to refresh and load with latest stories. Now many times, I have to force quit the app after which it loads. Also dictionary lookup feature is not working. This is happening both on iPad 10.5” and iPhone XS MAX. I have installed all app and software updates. Please fix this on both devices. Hence only 4 stars.
New version is buggy…hangs …sometimes completely stops internet on iPhone
I'm British but I'm in america. I want to read news stories from back home, not have a front page filled with yank rubbish. This is why I have the BBC app. If I want to read about America, I'll open a US news app. Why can't I customise the front page? This app is a HUGE step backwards from how it used to be. Sort it out!
