My original intention with Ambient music was to make endless music, music that would be there as long as you wanted it to be. I wanted also that this music would unfold differently all the time - ‘like sitting by a river’: it’s always the same river, but it’s always changing. But recordings - whether vinyl, cassette or CD - are limited in length, and replay identically each time you listen to them. So in the past I was limited to making the systems which make the music, but then recording 30 minutes or an hour and releasing that. REFLECTION in its album form - on vinyl or CD - is like this. Amazing generative music app. Had this from its launch on the iPhone / iPad and not usable wonderfully on the Mac. I still use this for sleeping and when I need a bit of salt generative music. I was a little apprehensive at first dropping £30 on this app but I had used other Brian Eno / Peter Chilvers apps before and they were great and importantly updated over time to keep them working with IOS updates etc. I still use Bloom a lot for creating hypnotic patterns. Listening to Bloom is good, but this app feels so much more sophisticated as a music generator. It really feels like someone is there making the music! Perfect for listening anytime of the day and wonderful to sleep to. I often play Sounds of the Lid to drift off to sleep but this app has recently taken their place. Ambient music on tap! Money well spent. UPDATE: One small annoyance I've found from using the app over time is the timer controls are too close to the bottom of the screen and are very difficult to control. Not sure if this is just because I'm on an iPhone 11pro. They just need lifting further up into the screen as there is plenty of free space. Still an amazing app that I use almost every day! UPDATE 2: Still using the app pretty much every day! Been a life saver for relaxing during the past year of craziness! -- SiOnara, 2020-12-03 ### ***-- "Reflections on Reflection" After decades of listening to Brian Eno’s ambient music, it is now fused with my DNA. It is always somewhere in my life every day. However, what I truly love and miss this time around - with Reflection - is a tiny bit of emotion here and there in the music, whether it is a slow withering texture or a slight chord change, a wash or something barely there. I do find the sound ingredients of Reflection to be a little limited, recognisable and mechanical. I find myself listening to LUX a lot more. I think it would be great if Brian added some new tints and textures here and there with each seasonal update to lend a little more feeling. I want this to be his best creation so badly! If you want a new version of those every time you listen, then this app is for you. The price seems steep by comparison to many apps, but they don’t have infinite boundaries. I somehow managed to convince myself that this was £2.99 and it wasn't till afterwards that I realised I had been charged £29.99 - in my opinion this really is a high charge for such an app. I would have wholly recommended it for the the lower price - it is a very interesting piece of art - and I have left it running for hours in the background - very good to snooze to for instance. The visuals are also quite interesting - they just morph very slowly - almost imperceptibly. Also going for a run with this on headphones worked for me also. There was a lot going on before you even got it and there is some very clever new techniques at work when you use it, to have your own personal Brian Eno :) The tools and the basis may be his, but the music is ... well, is it yours ? ... or is it his ? ... or both ? ... or neither ? :) Well worth the price, which he has absorbed the daft Brexit App price increases for your benefit. Reflection does have a puzzlingly hefty price tag and I'm not sure if the app warrants it. With Bloom, Scape and the rest there is some sense of self-creation - some element of interaction. Not here. The colour-design changes over time along with the music which, I'm led to understand endlessly ebbs and flows over the years. I am typing this review whilst listening to the (free) Longplayer app. This sublime composition will be playing, with any luck, until 23:59 in 2999 with no repetition. Longplayer is a gift to the world. So well done. Very well done. I bought the app on the first day of release, and I've had a lot of pleasure from it; on the occasional day I've worked from home I've left it running for up to seven hours and, at low volumes, it really does create a calming work environment. At louder volumes, however, it's almost too engaging to be truly considered ambient music, but this is not really a criticism. I baulked at the price at first but a bit of perspective helps: when Eno released "Thursday Afternoon" in 1985 it retailed at a price that was comparable to about £31. in today's money, the accompanying video cost even more, and the necessary hardware was still new and, consequently, really expensive. That only lasted an hour as well, whereas "Reflection" - which is a more rewarding piece - lasts forever. Endlessly evolving sounds and visuals. The price tag is pretty hefty, although worth it if you love this kind of music. -- gnozu, 2017-01-01 ### ****- "Very nice (if expensive)" This is the generative edition of 'Reflection' and it sounds very nice indeed (if you're an Eno fan). I like the idea of music you can just leave alone if you wish to or give it your attention if you so desire. Reading back through an interview Eno gave for a Compact Disc magazine in 1986, around the time 'Thursday Afternoon' was released, Brian Eno mentioned that in the future he hoped to be able to create pieces that effectively had no beginning or end with no time restrictions placed by the limitations of CD. Thirty years later, it's finally a reality. Only one negative - the price.
