The whole business model of this company is admirable but the app is a disaster. I have been communicating with their very good customer service (Sheila) but the only real outcome was a store credit refund. This doesn’t address the fact that the app is a poor reading experience. Problems with image orientation, constant pagination (which seems to get stuck in a never ending loop) and pages jumping about. Reluctantly I’ve given up with this company as unless I buy a dedicated ebook reader I see no way of been able to read their books on the iPad.

I really wanted to avoid buying ebooks from a giant competitor, so I tried these guys. Now I wish I hadn't bothered.

The range of books is good, but the only realistic way to read them is by using their own approved app. That's bad enough, but this app has never in its life had anyone even remotely competent in typography anywhere near it.

There is a variety of fonts to use, but only one of the sans-serif ones (the default) renders acceptably. All of the others vary in displayed size, and descenders are often clipped because the line-height is incorrectly set.

Trying to set the font-size to compensate for that is an exercise in futility, because the available sizes are so coarse as to be unusable.

The reading experience is so poor compared to even a typical *website* that I don't expect to ever recommend this app or the service behind it -- quite the opposite.

I bought a book and downloaded it, that was quite easy.  But the formatting was horrible: words would run over from one line to another without breaking at the end of a syllable or being hyphenated e.g. ‘loneliness’ was broken into ‘lo’ at the end of one line and ‘neliness’ at the start of the next. On top of this, the lines were so close together they were hard to read. 

I complained and was told, ‘I'm afraid that our Ebook Reader app is having a few difficulties with the formatting of some files.’  It was suggested I try another app. Many hours of fruitless effort later, I have given up.

However, they did make a considerable effort to sort the problem out for me, and then refunded the purchase price of the book when that didn’t work.  In short, good people managing a useless product (for the book I bought).

The recent update forced a redownload of all books and now none can be read. Open a book and you will end up with a never ending loading icon, with no pages ever being rendered. Would give it zero stars if I could.

Several of the features don’t work as described. Zoom with a pinch doesn’t work, turn pages with a tap or swipe doesn’t work, it just turns to the start of the next chapter. Each chapter is just a continuous block of text that I have to scroll down to read, no individual pages or margins. The font size increase and decrease only works on the title pages, not the main text, so is uncomfortably small on an IPad. Pagination takes a along time when making any changes.

Seriously, can you not pay one of the free e-readers for license instead of this?

After opening the menus for change font / colour / background the only way I could close them was by force-quitting the app.

The font size adjustments are so poor on an iPad —from too small to too large in a single leap—that it's unpleasant. Line-spacing is too tight to read comfortably.
