Great features and amazing to be able to use Gaia on a computer and sync to the phone but the app is very hard to use. Not user friendly at all. The saved tab is confusing and slow to navigate. The app is trying to download maps I thought I deleted years ago and I can’t stop it. And it’s super slow to sync changes I made on the computer. The new home tab isn’t loading for me at all, not that I want it.
Been using the app for 3-4 years now. For an app I pay more than $80 a year it’s just not worth it. I have mapping data that I’ve collected over those years and syncing takes ages. The entire back end of this app is glacial. The web interface is unintuitive, very slow and despite now paying over twice the subscription fee just rubbish. Power users might want to go elsewhere, especially for over $80 a year.
I’ve used this app for a few years for all sorts of adventures, from hiking and SUP paddling to bike packing and fast packing. I like it over AllTrails because I don’t need community or suggested routes, just a reliable map I can plot on and refer to whilst exploring. For this purpose it has been great; however, the increase of subscription price by more than 100% over the last year has pushed it outside of reasonable for what it provides me, so I’ve decided to go with another competitor app that is a fraction of the cost. If the subscription price comes down again I might reconsider but not now.
I use Gaia for enduro/dirtbike riding in state forests. Currently the app will not navigate pre existing tracks recorded by yourself or others, i’ve raised an issue but developers do not have a time frame on when it will be fixed. I’ve found the app freezes a lot and sometimes closes itself even with the local map area downloaded to your device before hand in case theres no signal where you’re going so the offline maps feature is poor. I do however like how you can see “public tracks” and routes recorded by others and download the gpx files. There is options for map layers with topo and satellite images. How ever I find the normal map on an iphone to be much higher definition and clearer satellite imagery than Gaia.
Only able to download a very small amount of offline maps… about the size of a large cupboard… not great when in Outback Australia… I’ve wasted my money on the one very badly
Works fantastically on iPad and iPhone. Best mapping app I’ve used. Great for planning and logging trips. CarPlay though needs some work. Direction of your icon doesn’t display correctly unless the phone is unlocked and on. Layers often don’t show correctly unless fiddled with on the phone until they snap into place. Not ideal when driving.
This is a very functional app, with a few funnies. Full disclosure I have premium so your experience might vary. I love the access to offline Australian government topo maps. Detail galore! My upgrade wish is for these to be available to view on Apple Car Play instead of restricting these to the base map so I can use them 4 wheel driving. Please? I’d love for the search function to be upgraded and debugged. I search for well known places across Australia but they sometimes don’t show up. Lesser known (gazetted towns) are nowhere to be found. I click on an alternative nearby then my start location defaults to this random pin every time I open the app. It’s frustrating. Otherwise keep developing it! Awesome app I plan to keep paying to use…
The latest version still doesn’t correctly record total ascent. On this morning’s work out it was showing 152m at one stage, then 137m by the time I finished. Very frustrating. MotionX GPS can do it, why not Gaia?
Honestly the app on it’s own is great. But the Apple CarPlay function isn’t there yet. It’s extremely glitchy. I find myself having to close it and reopen it often to keep it working. Definitely needs some work.
