Impaktor is a drum synthesizer with a vast sonic palette, that turns any surface into a playable percussion instrument. 

You just slap your desk like you would a real drum. The real acoustical impulses from the built-in microphone are used as an excitation source for advanced sound modules that simulates behavior of membranes, cymbals, metallophones or strings. This makes Impaktor a highly responsive  and expressive instrument. 

With semi-modular architecture and several types of synthesis, Impaktor can produce a wide range of tones, from acoustic, like Tabla, Djembe, Marimba, Cymbals, Metal bars to electronic or industrial sounds. 

We strongly recommend using the app with wired headphones to avoid acoustic feedback and ensure ultra-low latency. (USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter, USB-C headphones or an audio interface).

You can use the Impaktor app with a contact microphone or analog drum pad to achieve isolated and sensitive input, reducing ambient noise and enhancing trigger accuracy.

I thought this was just going to be a gimmick app, but it is a phenomenal, creative and *fun* live beat maker/overdubbed/wav maker for  anyone who wants to make their own loops, simply by tapping with their fingers on the iPad or the surface it is resting on. It's one screen interface and built FX, click track, and instrument presets offers enormous sonic variety from straight acoustic and electronic kit and hand drum sounds to the outer reaches of glitch and industrial noises, and you can capture and layer multiple loops, bounce down, add delay or reverb, build patterns across multiple slots, and generate new patches/instruments either just by mucking around with the knobs and buttons live, or just by hitting the 'rand' button and seeing what happens, and all in a very instinctive and creative way, which can't be said of more conventional drum machines. As a former live drummer and future customer of something like the Roland HPD 20 this will do until I can save up. A steal at its price, but I agree a modern MIDI and audio sync update would be a good thing. Oh and a recordable XY pad and... I could go on. :) Just buy it already!

### ***** "A unique and brilliant instrument"
This is one of the most unique apps for IOS and I have used it on many recordings. It has so much packed into its single screen interface, yet it is easy and great fun to use. It sounds great and it allows the musician to play freely on other physical objects in contact with the device. It captures the depth and feel of every beat, playing back up to six loops of any of the onboard sounds which are all fully programmable.

As an instrument it is complete, although it really needs an IAA link and transport panel, as well as synchronisation with other apps using Midi Clock/start/stop and Ableton Link.

On the issue of updates, the developer has confirmed that it will be updated before IOS11 and that it is well optimized and does not slow down devices. I look forward to the updates and really hope that an IAA panel & synchronisation can be included.

This is quite a unique app, with features not found in any other synth I've tried (and I've tried a lot). Does some freaky stuff when used unconventionally - voices triggering and mixed with randomized sounds, for instance. A couple of problems which need addressing though:
1) Live audio record (as opposed to the sequencer) seems to stop working after 30 seconds to a minute and it starts making a glitchy noise, which doesn't get recorded and means that your record file has ended. 
2) Audio recordings can't be accessed via iTunes - when you try to copy them onto your PC, they just come out as 0kb files with no extension. This means you have to use Audiocopy into another app or Dropbox upload, which is a pain.
