The best UPnP app there is
This app is a far cry from the other UPnP apps. Even Bubble UPnP seems crude and simple compared to JPLAY’s slick interface and rich feature set. I’m a long-time Roon user but lately prefer the purity of sound that UPnP brings. The only thing that held me back was the app. Now, that is no longer a consideration.
If you like the Roon interface but would rather use UPnP, or if you only stream from Qobuz or Tidal, JPLAY is the answer. This app offers it all, complete with unified views of all libraries, be they local or in the cloud.
The app is super responsive, thanks to local meta data caching on the tablet. So no more waiting for the screen to populate as the app needs to retrieve data from the server as you browse folder levels.
JPLAY offers a large chunk of the features previously only available in Roon such as an instant overview of the number of albums, tracks, artists, composers, and playlists, Recently Played Tracks, Recently Added, History, Associated Artists, Recommendations, Album versions, Focus (filtering), Radio (automatic continued play at queue end based on what was played before), Search by a large range of metadata fields and narrowing down within the search results, Support for and unified view of multiple libraries with easy filtering.
It was mentioned in another review that the app crashes, but over the course of several months of use, this has never happened to me.
That said, UPnP is not always as easy to use or as stable as Roon, especially if you have multiple endpoints and like to swap between them a lot. The small issues I’ve seen such as “library not available” or “player not found” are common to UPnP and also happen with other UPnP apps but can always be fixed by re-searching for devices, or if that fails, by restarting the server/player. These small issues aside, JPLAY is consistently more stable than other UPnP apps. I’ve done duration tests and found that the app will continue playing for days on end with no issues whatsoever, even while the tablet is locked or used for other activities.
So, is the app perfect? No, but neither is Roon, or any other app, for that matter. I’m counting on the maker to address the few remaining inconsistencies in a next update and continue improving the app.
Crash on startup
Freshly installed Jplay on an iPad Air running 12.5.7 but the app crashes on startup every time. Works fine on other, more recent iDevices though. The home screen has all your streaming services together which is convenient. Gapless replay on my Hegel H190 isn’t really gapless, as there is about a second delay between tracks, which is annoying. Is it worth the hefty yearly subscription fee? Not in its current state I think. I’m reinstating my BlueSound Node 2i in my set, as the BluOS software is free and performs better.
App don’t work well
Tried many of times but know I stopped because of each time rerender error in screen and app is blocked.
Error in screen
error message on screen after some playing time. iPhone or iPad needs to restart. Hope that problem will be solved!
Very nice first impression
I really love your app to control Qobuz in combi with Sonos Amp.
But it still seems to have bugs. Some ALBUMS specialy in 24bit dont seem to playback correct.
Hope you can fix this.
Seems to beat Roon because there no core needed. Like the soundquality in combination with Qobuz. User interface is similair to Roon. Curious about the recommendations and algoritmes.
Jplay music interface
Ooohhh my God!!!!!
Simply the best solution i’ve ever tried on my 10.000 euros system.
I ve runned roon a few years before, having the same sound quality though, but the price was too high for me at that point and decided i was okk with ipad/air play runnin a Sotm sms ultra / denafrips Termy Dac combo ………………… what a mistake!
Jplay eventualy put it all together for 50/ year going with mpd/dlna protocol, and the experience, sound, meta data, all of it is absolutly amaizing, open, airy, beautiful… i am stunned. Thx guys for that work.
As far as i am concerned … looks like a lifetime solution !!
Very good app, but HR is totally bugged
HR music is lagging a lot with Tidal.
Cher. Très bonne application sur mon Hegel H190. Pas de problèmes. Mais baissez le prix par pitié.
