Perfect to learning less common languages

mingming1012 on

Was looking for a good app to learn Thai and was recommended with Ling by a friend. What makes Ling different from other apps is they offer a wide range of languages that is hard to find somewhere else, also the dialogues are practical and fun to practice with, you learn real conversations that you’d actually use. I also really enjoyed non-ai audios they have in the app, so soothing. Highly recommended

ควรพัฒนาปรับปรุงการบัคในแบบฝึกหัดเติมคำในช่องว่างของระบบการเรียนภาษาเกาหลีค่ะ คำตอบที่มีให้เลือกควรเป็นภาษาเกาหลี ไม่ใช่ภาษาอังกฤษ

Not enough explanation for everything

I tried learning Cantonese using Thai and English. I found it very difficult to understand the content of the lesson if I wasn’t previously had formal Cantonese lessons before using Ling. There is no word by word translation in the app, only sentence by sentence translation is available. Ling literally drops the meaning of 請問 in the Thai version and doesn’t give any notes or explanation on that. The transliteration system the app used is also not widely accepted. The app uses neither Jyutping nor Yale romanization. There were no explanations on tonal differences. No explanation on the n/l initial sound variations (e.g. 你,女). No explanation on the dropping of ng- sound (e.g. 我). No explanation that 佢 is in fact a non-gendered pronoun. It is also very confusing that Ling picked the word “เธอ“ which could be interpreted as either a 2nd or 3rd personal pronoun, to describe 佢. Consistency in Ling also doesn’t exist. Ling translated 中文 as either “จีน“ or ”ภาษาจีน“ which are actually have different connotations. Overall this is not an app I’d recommend to anyone trying to learn Cantonese from the beginning. You still need a lot of researching and linguistic training before really being able to understand the course Ling offers. I do not know about any other languages since Free version doesn’t allow me to explore them. It may be a different experience, but based on my experience for Cantonese, I do not think it’s worth it to risk your money on the app that is not even consistent.

Flag Icon

Hi, I really like the design of your app. It’s really easy to use. However, I don’t know if it’s possible that your team can change the flag icon of the traditional Chinese to ROC flag or at least Chinese Taipei flag? As a Taiwanese(ROC), it’s a bit offensive to see the flag of (PRC).

I want to use this app but it’s so inconvenient when I can’t use it in a landscape view. It’s been years and it hasn’t been added!
