### ***** "Works as described - thank you!"
I installed the safari extension and was quite happy to find that:
a) it works! I no longer see shorts or the shorts button
b) it seems minimally invasive ie. within the extension settings it only asks to view my page contents/history for youtube.com and not any other websites.
Happy to pay the £1.99 to support the developer.

I will add, for anyone struggling, make sure you follow the instructions to enable the extension (in Settings > Safari > Extensions).
Also, I’ve had issues with Safari extensions a recently - sometimes I’ve enabled a new extension, but then first time I’ve opened Safari the extension becomes disabled, so I have to enable for a second time (after which it stays enabled) - seems to be an Apple bug maybe?
So if you find it’s not working, maybe double-check the settings and check the extension is definitely enabled!
