“The biggest software advance for writers since the word processor.” —Michael Marshall Smith, bestselling author
Typewriter. Ring-binder. Scrapbook. Scrivener combines all the writing tools you need to craft your first draft, from nascent notion to final full stop.
Tailor-made for creating long manuscripts, Scrivener banishes page fright by allowing you to compose your text in any order, in sections as large or small as you like. Got a great idea but don’t know where it fits? Write when inspiration strikes and find its place later. Grow your manuscript organically, idea by idea.
Whether you plan or plunge, Scrivener works your way: meticulously outline every last detail first, or hammer out a complete draft and restructure later. Or do a bit of both. All text sections in Scrivener are fully integrated with its outlining tools, so working with an overview of your manuscript is only ever a tap away, and turning Chapter Four into Chapter One is as simple as drag and drop.
Need to refer to research? In Scrivener, your background material is always at hand. Write a description based on a photograph. Reference a video or PDF. Check for consistency with an earlier chapter. On the iPad, open two documents side-by-side; on the iPhone, flip between research and writing with just two taps.
Once you’re ready to share your work with the world, simply compile everything into a single document for printing, or export to popular formats such as Word, PDF, Final Draft or plain text. You can even share using different formatting, so that you can write in your favorite font and still keep your editor happy.

Syncing using not only Dropbox which is expensive

Customer Kim on

Südafrika

I am from South Africa. Dropbox is extremely expensive for me (especially with the exchange rate between the Dollar and the Rand). Google Drive is much more affordable and I would love to rather use Google Drive to sync across devices (a Windows Laptop and an iOS iPad). We are however forced to use Dropbox. I used to have Scrivener on my iPad and on my Windows Laptop (Lenovo), but dropped the iPad version because I can't afford Dropbox. Please look into syncing using Google Drive (I have the Google Drive app as well as lots of other Google products on my iPad) and I will use the iPad version again. It will be absolutely fantastic if you can also work in Notiin and ChatGPT in some way as well. ChatGPT is awesome for planning and outlining and Notion for planning.

Promising, but…

Osks on

Südafrika

The productivity gains using Scrivener on my iPad Pro (my go-to device) are real and should not be underestimated However, there are several (pretty major) disappointments that make me doubt it as a serious editing tool… not being able to define styles and the way notes created on the desktop version are obscured, are my two major gripes Several features can be greatly improved, like access to my font library and my preferred font without having to first navigate through a series of menus and then hanging to scroll through the entire list… If these things could be attended to by the developers, my rating will greatly improve But for now, I will persist in the hope that these things will be attended to VERY SOON!

Fix Desktop Sync!

Axel Ind on

Great and useful app, but the file version the app makes cannot be used on the desktop and vice versa. If this were fixed, I would absolutely recommend this app. The word count system is simple but incredibly good.

Awesome tool for screenwriters

Write your script from anywhere using your mobile device with this easy-to-use app.

Disappointing

S.Momberg on

Südafrika

Great features. But the biggest issue is the wasted time it takes to save/sync to the cloud. To save three new simple notes, it took nearly two minutes. Not a problem if that would happen in the background. But if you get a call or navigate to another app, Scrivener stops syncing. It starts all over again when you go back to it. Hugely frustrating and a time waster. Scrivener, such a great app, but this issue is elementary. Please sort it out. With the latest iOS upgrade it doesn’t select text/select all easily. Not smart phone friendly at the moment.

You're in the content business -- you need Scrivener

Erich Viedge on

Chances are you are producing content all the time; for you blog, proposals, even maybe brochures, booklets, a business book, a screenplay, a documentary, a novel. If you're writing, you need Scrivener. It's like nothing you've ever used before. You can take notes, and then re-arrange them where they fit best, later. You can assemble your raw material (PDFs, content from web pages or wherever) and then organise the information the way you need to. I've been using Scrivener for years -- it's simple and powerful. It's not a word processor. It helps you get the words down, and then you can export the words to a word processor so you can refine the layout. It's a brilliant concept, and an absolutely indispensible tool for anybody who writes.

Probably on its way to becoming the best long-form writing app for iOS

Neal_Cassady on

Südafrika

If you already have Scrivener on the Mac / PC, then buying this is a no-brainer. If you write long-form (be that in academia, reports, pleadings, novels, short-stories, manuals etc.), and you haven't given Scrivener a go, you are honestly missing out on something that will make your life, and your words, easier. It's not a word processor, it's a what writing should be. The iOS version has been a long-time coming. After trying bought-in developers, Keith Blount (who single-handedly wrote the Mac app), dived in himself, and brought the iOS version to life, in the image of its original inspiration. That direct involvement, has seen the creation of something that takes most of the power-features of the original, and re-imagines it for iOS. Quite frankly, it has blown away all expectations. This app is designed to complement the Mac/PC app, but it's powerful enough to exist alone - with ample control of compilation into a final product. It takes full-on productivity on iOS only, a huge, huge leap forward.

Syncing DOES work but…

I was worried reading all the issues everyone had with Syncing, and they’re all genuine concerns (I had some of the issues myself and had to look up a tutorial on how to properly Sync from Dropbox) 1. You need a Dropbox account. It’s free to use, don’t worry about the subscription offer. When you open the Scrivener app, it’ll have an option to link your drop box account. This will create an “Apps” folder that creates a “Scrivener” folder holding the essential files for Scrivener. In this “Scrivener” folder, upload your project’s folder from desktop. 2. When Syncing, you cannot have both programs open at once. For mobile changes syncing to desktop: make sure the desktop application is closed. When you make a change to mobile, sync and close the app. Wait a minute or two for everything to sync to Dropbox, and open the desktop version. Everything should now be synced, and this works the same vice versa from desktop to mobile. I am used to the real-time syncing of Google Docs, so this may be tedious if this is what you’re familiar with too, but as someone whose main projects are on Scrivener, this is a useful app to access and work on my projects from mobile to desktop.

The best writing application I’ve used so far. A powerhouse from concept to compilation.

Useless for screenwriting

Getting into screenwriting mode is a scavenger hunt. When you finally it, it doesn’t format the margins properly and there are no page breaks.
