Good, but important drawbacks
This is a review for the iPad version of the app. I generally enjoy reading The Economist on the iPad, but two drawbacks are important enough to merit a downgrade of one star for each. 1. The app is horribly slow. My iPad is not the most recent (an iPad Pro from 2018); still the app is noticeably slower than any other app I have, to the point that I sometimes have to wonder whether it has registered a tap at all, for such simple use cases as saving an article to my reading list. 2. I have not found a way to enable proper offline reading. I can download the audio, but whenever I am on a plane and offline, none of the graphics are available. This is especially annoying for charts, without which articles are missing crucial information.
Read in browser
Reading in browser is much easier and smoother than on the app. App lags and freezes, and often “forgets” that I’m subscribed, the app is bad
Crashes constantly upon opening
New version simply unusable. What the hell am I paying for!?
Buggy app
Just an example. The ticks for a read article only work if you scroll WAY past the actual article, and past all the article suggestions on the bottom. Thus, if you just read the article, scroll no further and go to the next one, nothing gets marked as read. This is about the level of care this app gets.
App crashes all the time
I pay piles of money, was forced into this annoying Digital-only model, and now I can’t even read articles comfortably because the app crashes sometimes 3-4 times per article
Good for reading, poor for listening
I am really disappointed by the latest update. I am a subscriber and I listen to the weekly magazine. The audio player was already poor in the past, and it has gotten worse - has even the basic ‘create a playlist’ function really been removed???
Fix the audio on your app!
Since the last update there is no way to manage the queue of the audio articles , we can only add them to the queue one by one. Instead of increasing your annual fees, you should considering firing the team responsible of this annoying app.
Abo-Falle
Wollte The Economist einen Monat probehalber testen. Das Abo wurde trotz Kündigung und ohne Hinweis nach dreissig Tagen verlängert und damit kostenpflichtig. Habe zwei Monate später die Zahlungen auf dem Bankauszug entdeckt - und nie eine Rechnung erhalten. Nochmals gekündigt - ohne dies per live chat oder persönlichen Telefonanruf zu bestätigen - was offenbar notwendig ist. Insgesamt vier Monate später immer noch ein kostenpflichtiges Abo. Jetzt das Kündigungsprozedere inklusive Live chat wiederholt. Die versprochene Kündigungsbestätigung per Mail nach 24 Stunden noch nicht erhalten. Habe meine Bank jetzt angewiesen keine Rechnungen von The Economist mehr zu begleichen. Ein schlechtes Vorbild für eine Wirtschaftszeitung! Oder ein typisches?
