The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE) helps plan outdoor photography shoots in natural light, particularly landscape and urban scenes. It's a map-centric Sun, Moon and Milky Way calculator: see how the light will fall on the land, day or night, for any location on earth.

Whether you need at-a-glance information on today's sun, moon and Milky Way data for your current location, or need to plan a precise alignment of the full moon for a future shoot, TPE has the tools you need. The combination of augmented reality, line-of-sight analysis and visual search supports the most sophisticated photo planning needs.

Night mode features a 3D representation of the Milky Way, pole stars and major constellations directly over the map, so you can easily visualise exactly how to align your shot.

Research and save your own list of favourite photographic locations, using seven different map types (including two offline maps) and save them in your locations list. Favourite locations are always displayed right there on the map.

Advanced features including visual sun and moon search, automatic time zone and elevation detection, correction for atmospheric refraction and height above the horizon, ensuring that you have the best possible information for planning your shoot.

You can even determine when the sun or moon will rise from behind nearby hills and mountains.

For me it’s good to see where the sun goes up and down etc. The app can’t find all the places I’m looking for even though the places are quite common where I live. Better if you live in America I assume. I can’t email the screenshot/photo and can’t add it on my calendar. I have to do everything manually which was not what I expected.

While this may be the go to app it isn’t because it is easy to use. Yes if you use it a lot bla bla bla but what if you dip in and out twice a year. Just frustrating to use. I’ve googled how to save a location, you shouldn’t have to. It needs starting over again. I received a sarcastic reply, but how do I save a location that I’m currently at? Or one I found using the map, Not one I’ve searched for assuming it’s in the database which many places aren’t.

I bought this app years ago for judging where the sun light would be at any given time for landscape photography. It’s really good for that. 

Particular favourite is to use the AR feature which allows you to frame a scene using iphone camera and then track the sun/ moon over anytime of day. Pretty fun even if you just want to bag the best spot on a campsite or see when and where a supermoon will rise on the horizon. 

Still haven’t explored lots of the other features but I particularly like the fact that it’s still functioning after a small initial outlay years back.

If you already have Photopills don’t bother with this. PhotoPills does more and it’s free. The extra stuff like predicting sunrise/sunset, that may be of use that Photopills doesn’t have, you have to subscribe to, they don’t mention that in the description and as such I have asked for my money back. Maybe the 3d version is better but you can’t even pay a little more to upgrade you have to pay another £9.99 for that.

It was great until I signed up to the Skyfire add-on and now the app keeps randomly logging me out and refusing to accept my account password to get back in. It means I can’t keep my locations in sync with my desktop version either which is more of a nuisance than missing out on Skyfire which isn’t that accurate at the best of times anyway. Please fix this.

It's pretty simple, really; we think that we know where it rises and sets, but in reality we're mostly clueless as to the movements of the sun in relation to our surrounds. There's little worse than promising yourself or a third party that you have the best place from which to capture the sun, shadows, twilight, etc... only to find that you were miles out. This App fixes that problem. Simple. Brilliant. Easy to follow. Download it now!!

Update to my previous review.
Response from support was great, and they pointed out why I seemed to be getting inaccurate sunrise and sunset times on a particular location. Essentially, I had somehow set an incorrect local time for one of my saved locations (my bad!).
This is a complex app, and it clearly takes some time and effort to use, but very useful once you get to grips with it.
