trainchinese will teach you Chinese, with a free and complete dictionary, thousands of vocab lists, example sentences, audio recordings, measure words, character animations and Optical Character Recognition — not to mention a powerful flash card training system that even includes handwriting training!

• Our dictionary prioritises commonly-used words and phrases above the obscure and obsolete, while example sentences and measure words (classifiers) provide crucial context to help you decide which Chinese word is the most appropriate translation. Other dictionaries just leave you guessing!

• We've got Optical Character Recognition (OCR) too. Spotted some Chinese you can't read? Capture a photo of some Chinese text from a menu, book or sign, and the app identifies and translates the characters for you.  

• Search for words by part of speech

• Mistyped a word? Helpful spelling suggestions get you to the right results fast.

Havent used the app for long but it has been helpful and I was planning to buy a subscription after trying it for a little longer but there is something really wrong with how the ‘create flash card’ keeps track of your weekly allotted free cards. This set of apps is great to study Chinese, but it’s a huge headache to do anything account related. The UI isn’t clear, it still offers me to buy a year subscription even though I already bought it? Which was confusing. Also it asked me for a nickname and an email on the writing app. I assumed it would put my nickname for the leaderboards but it puts my email? No one else has their email, and I don’t really want that public, so I guess I can’t do very well on that app, which is discouraging. Please fix your overly complicated and headache inducing UI. I was debating between taking off one or two stars for the admin side of the app, which is a shame because the Chinese learning portion of these apps is the best I’ve found.

First of all, this is a great app for learning Chinese. That’s not the problem that I had with it.

The free version gives you 3 lists and 15 new words a week (Note that if you delete one, you don’t get that back). Paying for the subscription gets rid of this weekly limit, but you’ll soon notice that you’re still limited to the three lists that they give you upfront. That means that if you fill out all three lists and continue paying the subscription, you are still capped at just 300 words and are paying for essentially what you could get if you canceled your subscription. (You could get the same number of words by also just waiting 20 weeks?)

All of this is a little unconventional, but I would give them a break if it weren’t for the fact that you are also allowed to buy extra lists independently of having a subscription. This means they give you the option to spend money without getting practically anything in return (You’ll still have the weekly limit). This is when I decided that something seemed a little fishy…

It’s sad that such a great app became so offputting when it came to payment.  The developers otherwise seem like honest, nice people, but I just simply can’t trust such a pricing model with my bank information. If you are ok with this model, this might be a good app for you.

Excellent design. TC has helped me reach my first goal of memorizing the stroke order for 500 basic Chinese words. The inability, however, to change the tone colors is the only drawback. I.e. Before learning with this app, I had already matched the 2nd tone to yellow in my brain. Other than this issue, TC is one of the best apps available for learners of Chinese.

### ***** "The best app for learning Chinese that you will ever find!"
If anyone is as desperate to learn Chinese as I am and you want to learn the words along with how to write the proper strokes, hear how the word is pronounced then look no further as this is definitely the app for you. I had downloaded so many apps but more than 5 lessons in and the they would start having long sentences that I obviously can’t read because it doesn’t teach you each of the characters and then has you doing exercises where you have to match the dialogue up but you can’t since it doesn’t teach you the actual words. 

This app is amazing as it tells you if the character is a verb, noun, adj etc... It has the pinyin with tone and how to pronounce it under the the respective character. If you’re not good with reading the tone mark the app has the option of having the characters along with the pinyin of the word in different colors depending on the tone for example (1st tone mā is in red, 2nd tone má is in orange, 3rd tone mǎ is in green, and 4th tone mà is in blue) (only vowels get a tone marking, a, e, i, o, u,...) so if you have a word that has an a with a neutral tone (ā) in the pinyin then（we’ll shān 山 as an example)then both the pinyin of the word shān and the character 山 will be in red. Then let’s say have a word with a rising tone a (á) in pinyin then the (well use Hān 寒 as an example) then both the pinyin of Hān and the character 寒 will be in orange, and so on.

 The other best part of the app is that when you add words to your training to learn, and once you think you know them well the app will put them into a sleep state so you won’t see them (unless you go back to review it) and they will be asleep for a few days and then they’ll come back into the training to see if you know the word. 

A very good thing that the app has is it has a clip of how to write how the character in the proper stroke order which is important. On the training it also has you write out the characters so you have a good grasp on the each of the characters. If on the training you don’t know what it is just click you don’t know and the word will stay in your training so you can continue working on it.

Another great part about this app that I wish others had is that it has phrase decomposition meaning that the phrase is broken down into parts and explaining how the phrase was put together. A good example of this is 太好了（tài hǎo le) it breaks down and explains what tài 太 and if it’s adv, adj etc.... then explains the meaning of hǎo le 好了 and if it’s a adv, v, n etc
