Why do Google apps - across the board - function better than Apple’s native apps on their own devices? Maps, weather, and, yes translator. Superior devices running garbage apps makes no sense.

The translation itself is not bad, but a couple things make this really frustrating to use. First any playback of translation input by voice will be played back at MAXIMUM VOLUME. not great in many environments, not to mention bad on the ears. There is no way to adjust this. The normal volume settings seem to have no effect on it. Secondly, it is very difficult to select the translated text, because touching the screen keeps activating the dictionary. Also, if you finally are able to actually get the cursor to select, there is no “select all “option, and you can only copy a couple lines at a time using copy, it won’t move below the first three lines or so that are displayed, drag down doesn’t work. Why there is no “select all“ option for what you’ve just translated is absolutely ridiculous in 2025. Update: great, now they have broken the ability to edit anything that you have spoken into the Translate box. How is it Apple is putting out a text-based product that you can’t do basic editing on? It’s just unbelievable. Yandex, which is free, does much better

Not Reliable

App freezes. The downloaded language doesn’t work. Can’t zoom with the camera. What a piece of garbage app. Super disappointed, especially from Apple.

It doesn’t load either language. Whether I put in one word, small sentence or long one it’s constantly generating but seems to get stuck. Thought it was due to not being updated but came here to find out it is up to date so I’m not entirely sure what’s going on with that. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

Had several occasions where I downloaded offline languages in preparation for going somewhere without cell service, only to discover when I got there that it deleted them, making the app useless. It seems to be that Apple is optimizing phone storage, and there is no way to prevent that. If this glaring problem were fixed, I would easily rate it 4 or 5 stars.

Works good when it has internet but the on-device translation doesn’t work at all because languages packs couldn’t be downloaded for offline use. Despite toggling on background app refresh and cellular data, the download gear stays in the loading position perpetually and the language packs never finishes the download. My internet is working so that’s not the issue.

This app does not have Portuguese (Portugal) available. How can you not have the language from the motherland? Brazilian Portuguese is not exactly the same.
