Wagotabi: Learn Japanese

I am currently in my first month of studying Japanese, and have been looking for ways to immerse myself outside of studying. I came across this RPG game via word of mouth and it does not disappoint. It’s a very organic way of supplementing my existing knowledge. 5/5.

I’ve been learning Japanese on and off for years but I always have problems retaining vocab/how to build a sentence properly. This app has really hit to sweet spot with making me excited to learn and having fun whilst locking in what I am learning. And with the gradual exposure/replacement of English with Japanese, it’s incredibly rewarding 🧡 My only pointer is, with the Kanjidex, I would like to see explanations/little sentences included with ways to remember the kanji. It might be further down the line or in a future update but if not, it would be an amazing addition! Thank you so much for creating this app, it’s exactly what I have been looking for!!

*SPOILER ALERT* scroll to bottom to avoid When you mistake for saying you are beautiful josh and he calls you unskilled, you can hug a tree to sneak past him. If you go back to do the test, it soft-locks you in the narrow cinematic screen and you can’t move (My review recap): Very great, better pace than Duolingo, recommend wholeheartedly.

I am reasonably competent at Japanese so the current level was low for me but I was still completely absorbed. As an RPG it was well considered and fun, as a learning tool, exceptional. I can’t wait to see how this develops. Also just such a lovely way of building familiarity with prefectures (looking forward to Chiba-Ken!)

今日は！今日はきれいだ、ね？ This is my second review and OH MY I learnt so much. I learnt how to drink pan, and eat mizu XDD. Best Japanese learning app on the platform. Duolingo teaches in a way that is effective for european languages, but wagotabi is unmatched with their PERFECT combination of learning and exploring. It also keeps you thinking by replacing some english text with Japanese (Smart test —> 勉強する (Study/to study if I’m not mistaken) I think this deserves recognition by all japanese learners!

I was looking for an app to learn Japanese through immersion and so far it has been so simple to play and understand. I like it how they have combined resources from actual Japanese textbooks into the game. It’s easy to understand from the beginning as they start from the very scratch and gradually build up your phrase bank. You don’t have to stress much about doing your reviews as it is rather at your own pace. I have tried the demo before and have decided to fully support the authors. Looking forward to the game on Steam and Desktop platforms!!!

I think it is by far the best Japanese learning game (or perhaps app!) available in iOS. The method is effective and the user can learn a lot with little effort. The story is engaging and the art is very cute, they both help to characterise the prefectures where the game is set and to teach also about Japanese culture and places as well as the language. As if this were not enough, the game has a free demo and it does not use predatory tactics such as subscriptions or always on internet access: you buy it once for an affordable price and it is yours for life! I couldn’t recommend it more.

This is a pretty great game, the first language learning game that I actually found fun, but the audio isn’t working for me. It worked my first time playing but now there’s just nothing, I checked my volume, Bluetooth, and in game settings, but there’s just nothing. Edit: oh my god right after writing this review I tried flipping the physical “do not disturb” switch on my iPhone and it unmuted the game audio. Why????? Why would you make it work like that? Please change that 😭

This game is amazing, I haven’t gotten super far into it and I already know hiragana and am learning Katakana and some Kanji. This is a perfect addition for anyone looking to learn Japanese and add a little bit more fun into it. Plus it is teaching you super useful things, like immersion but a couple thousand dollars cheaper and people won’t judge you and start speaking English when you didn’t catch what they said the first time in Japanese, you can just replay it and get instant visual feedback with kana and explanations.
