It’s honestly amazing in every way except for one; unfortunately that one thing ends up driving you nuts after recurring consistently, and making you fall off keeping track properly. The issue is the CONSTANT disruptions to the bank connections. I’m having to reconnect the bank every day, which would be fine, if it actually worked. I follow all the steps, and the bank appears to be in perpetual “maintenance” mode. I am currently paying nearly $200 CAD a year for a premium budgeting service that fails at its most basic feature Direct Import. I switched to Rogers Bank (Rogers Mastercard) as my primary card, only to find YNAB doesn't support it at all. On top of that, my RBC connection is a total disaster. I have to re-authorize it almost every 24 hours. When I reached out to support for help, I was repeatedly brushed off with scripted responses telling me to "just enter transactions manually." If I wanted a manual spreadsheet, I wouldn't be paying $200 a year for automation. I finally spoke to a Support Manager (April), who admitted their "fix" for RBC likely wouldn't work and then hid behind policy to refuse any sort of service credit or extension for the months of downtime. Their only solution is You can leave if you want. Truly disgusting! YNAB clearly doesn't care about the Canadian market. They are happy to take our money—at a massive exchange rate—while providing a broken product and dismissive, "take it or leave it" customer service. Do not waste your money. The app is good, design well, functionally revolutionizing. I like the zero budget design more than traditional budgeting app. But the thing is that I just cannot afford or justify the expenses of more than $100 for an expense tracking app. Especially for us Canadians, the importing function is non-existent; even though there are ways to import bills from Canadian banks, they are not safe and doing so will annul the bank protection for my accounts. So over $100 is just paying for another expense tracking app to me. 2. The app itself is also super complicated. Although it is possible to learn, you will have to spend at least an hour to learn every time there is a new financial situation that happens in your life. Even just forgetting to track or slacking off for a few months would make the whole situation a mass. As someone with ADHD, starting something is always the hardest, yet YNAB’s complexity only adds more mental barriers (and actual time barrier) to continue on this process. I am exploring cheaper and easier options that are similar to YNAB. 3. Another complicated thing about YNAB is around credit cards. Even though I have learned twice about what the “assigned” in the credit card row means, I still keep being confused about it! The number there doesn’t correspond to anything and it’s confusing. I know that this system is designed based on having real money, but using credit cards rationally is a good way to earn benefits — more credits, cash back and other rights. A large part of the reason why I am using an expense tracking app is because I want to manage better at using credit cards. Right now I was told Actual Budget is good, so maybe I will migrate over there. 4. I’ve gained incredible confidence in my budget, giving me breathing room to focus on (and exceed) my savings. I have the flexibility to cover surprises and budget for gift-giving, and I’m not worried about treating myself either. Some issues: I stopped using automatic sync a few years ago as I found that some Canadian banks were consistently unreliable (and signing in violated their terms of service). It would be nice to have recurring goals for longer than two years. When things are tough, the app doesn’t sugarcoat it (for better or worse). And the subscription is a bit pricy.
