TLDR: The only budgeting solution that’s ever made sense to me. The web app is the flagship product, and because there’s a lot of tabular data involved, a desktop browser is still the best experience. However, mobile app is a well designed application with decent banking integration, data visualization that is continually improving, etc. All of that is secondary to the core product, and the benefit to my peace of mind from not having to worry about the state of my finances at any given moment. Money doesn’t come naturally to me, but 4 years with YNAB, and I’m no longer living paycheck-to-paycheck, my savings is growing, and my finances are much more resilient when unexpected expenses come up. Thanks YNAB!
This app used to be 5/5 stars. Until a few months ago it has continuously stopped connecting to my bank. Today I tried six different times to connect my bank, yet it said my login credentials were incorrect. They are not because I used those same credentials to login to my bank account. And when it does connect to my bank it has recently been adding in a double transaction. It’s incredibly frustrating! Especially since tech support is via email and it takes them 1-5 business days to get back to you. I need a phone number to call, or a chat bot to get my issue figured out ASAP. For this yearly price I suggest going somewhere else.
There have been problems with Amex syncing for years. And the way the app handles credit cards feels kind of pointless once you’re paying them off every month. The expenses are cleared in my budget when they post, but then i have to accept the ingoing and outgoing credit card payment which is just the sum of the other payments i’ve already accepted. And sometimes one of them doesn’t get registered and messes everything up. But in general it’s a great app that has filled the hole that Mint left.
Talk about life changing. I used to have terrible anxiety about money and if I would have enough funds on hand for a night out or for an emergency. Turns out, seeing our dollars assigned for specific purposes put my mind at ease. My one suggestion for YNAB is to give us the reporting tools on the mobile app rather than needing to sign in from the web.
I started using YNAB a year ago after I just graduated from college. This is the perfect app for learning to manage a budget, pay off debt, and increasing your net worth over time. I linked my bank accounts, credit cards, student loan accounts, as well as even my ROTH IRA investment account and my 401k through my work. I recommend this to every friend of mine in their early twenties that is just starting out. This app is amazing!!
This is a great app. Really appreciate finally adding some reporting capability through the “reflect” section, but it needs a couple enhancements… 1. Need the ability to switch between category view and group view. My group level reporting would be much more meaningful. 2. Allow reporting on custom time ranges (enter start and end date like on web version)
Don’t get me wrong, the method and this app have changed my life. I will always use this app. After decades of money unmanageability, I now know what my money is for. I’ve paid off tens of thousands in debt, I’ve been debt free ever since (except for those pesky student loans), and I’ve saved tens of thousands of dollars. So why the bad review? The new update makes me press so many more buttons now to assign money. Assigning money used to be so easy. Now I have to use a slider switch. It seems to always be facing the wrong way for what I want to do. So now I have to press out of the number pad, switch the slider, press the dollar entry part, and then use the keypad. TOO MANY PRESSES. Before the update, it took two presses. Enter the dollar amount, press enter. Done. Maybe I was using the app wrong all these years, but I don’t think so. Bring back the old user interface.
This app is very hard to navigate. It is hard to find your transaction history. You have to go all over the place before you finally get to any kind of d of transaction history. I want a register of all my transactions in one place and not have to do it by each category. I guess I will go back to spreadsheets.
This app kept me feeling in control of my finances for several years. That was when it was free. Once the price got hiked up to $15/month, I had to say good bye. There’s nothing else that compares to this app and I’d love to come back. Make some connections and get that ad revenue to feed the corporate overlords. I’ll sit through a bubble blaster ad just to keep my bank account in the black.
