Octopus on iPhone or Apple Watch simplifies the way you ride transport and shop in Hong Kong. Breeze through turnstiles or pay at retail outlets just by tapping your iPhone or Apple Watch on Octopus readers. No need to open an app or wake your device. Check your balance and skip queues by topping up using your favourite credit / debit card.

It is easy to get an Octopus before or after you arrive in Hong Kong. If you have an iPhone X or later, or Apple Watch Series 3 or later, simply download the Octopus App for Tourists to add a new Octopus. Well HK is definitely going backwards with this app… firstly tapping in out of the card works intermittently

Exchange rate is daylight robbery… worse than bank rate and they do not allow selecting paying in HKD… forcefully wanting to earn from exchange profit

I installed the app and tried to link Youtrip debit card for the minimum topup 
amount. The amount was deducted from my Youtrip account but nothing reflected on Octopus app. The app kept giving me only one option to add new card. Was wondering if the app was a scam.

Highly advise to avoid using this octopus for tourist. Exchange rate is HORRIBLE.
Banks and money changer are offering exchange rate of 5.74 while the app, 5.44.
What’s worse is that you can only pay in your native currency. I.e exchange rate is based on Octopus App. If it’s HKD, exchange rate will be based on your bank conversion instead.

### ***** "A Great Way to Travel in HKG"
Used this 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭 app for my recent 4D3N trip to Hong Kong. Managed to install the app and top up via credit card even before our travel. The app also supports 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝 function on Apple wallet; allowing us to travel seamlessly without requiring Face ID or passcode authentication.

The app can be used immediately for the bus ride to our hotel in Kowloon from the airport. Works seamlessly throughout our 4-days stay in Hong Kong, whether we are commuting on KMB bus or MTR.

Refund process was easy too and we get our money refund back to our credit card within couple of days.

I highly recommend this for people who plans to travel to Hong Kong.

Ok, 2 issues here:
1) transferring of physical card into the app doesn’t work. I’m not sure if there was any proper user testing conducted. 
2) top-ups using credit card seems to work only the first time as it happened to both me and my wife on our trip. The error reads, “your payment or transaction is not successful. Please call the octopus customer service hotline at +852 2266 2222 for assistance”. As you’d expect, the robot picking up your call isn’t helpful at all.
