## Files Description
Access and organise your files no matter where they’re located — on your device, in the cloud, on an external drive or file server— with Files. The Recents view displays the files you’ve been working on lately in high-resolution thumbnails. Use the powerful Browse view to navigate folders, organise your files with tags, move files between folders and search. Files also makes it easy to access iCloud Drive and third-party cloud storage services such as Dropbox, Box and OneDrive.

• Connect an external drive or SD card to your device to access the files

• Connect to a file server at work or a home PC using SMB from Files.

### *---- "Glitches unexpectedly"
I am infuriated in which when I annotate a file with the ‘Apple pencil’ my writings disappear as the app ‘unexpectedly’ glitches. Not all the writings but the ones I wrote for the past minute. Wastes my time, fix it because I’m thinking of switching.

Update:

I tried rewriting and it glitched again and deleted even MORE of my writings. Atrocious app.

2nd update

This app is actually trash keeps crashing and glitches the annotation feature. This is hopeless.

Final Update

I have given up on this app not going to use again. Glitches and deletes all my work I wrote with the Apple Pencil and gives me a f-ing migraine

While this app is essential for apple storage the big problem is editing anything, even the most basic. For example cropping a photo, you must download into apple photos, crop and then upload back to files. The sad thing is that apple photos edits the file name as well, so when back in files you have to go searching for your cropped photo. Extremely time consuming. Hope apple is listening. R

Files app has always been atrocious. As always you are never sure with apple if it is incompetence or intentional anti-competitive behaviour. But almost every app that requires multiple drive type manipulation has far far better functionality than the native app.

Nothing ever downloads. I always have to go to my Mac to obtain files which is beyond inconvenient. Advice is to sign out of iCloud and back in but this is only ever a temporary if at all. Very disappointing. Will be working with one drive from now on.

Bro ok. So i first found this out on march 11 2025 when i was doing random meme search online. And then i type a letter and it suspiciously comes up with a file named thank_you with a weird gif. But that aint my file! I never downloaded it and never seen anything like it. Then i typed the letter j and it came up w an empty file named joe and idk why but there are just random files that arent mine and arent shared either but they are using up my space and it really worries me bc i dont even know whose files they Are and how they got there but please i really worry about my privacy and security im only 12 yr old so pls fix this I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE FILES THAT ARE NOT MINE!!!

I love my M4 iPad, I can do almost everything I want to do without bringing a laptop. However, the files app is by far the biggest hurdles preventing me from switching entirely (aside from niche applications). It’s bordering on entirely useless. It gets stuck easily when switching between local, cloud and USB storage; it struggles with most cloud storage and like other users have pointed out, it’s generally just dumb. I’ll go through each of these points: 1) Getting stuck, when I’m going between any different type of storage I’ll tap on it and it just remains on the current page, no amount of closing and opening the app will fix it, it’s especially prevalent with external storage and cloud storage. 2) Cloud storage (especially OneDrive) is entirely useless. It’s laggy, changes don’t actually happen (eg changing names, creating directories, and dragging files won’t aren’t communicated to the server), it’s slow to update, you can’t click and drag, you have to share with the OneDrive app (what?! Why?). 3) I won’t linger on this point, the UI - it’s unintuitive. Want a list view for one directory and an icon for another? Too bad, either pick one or get used to switching. Overall, I hate this app - I hate using it, I hate how it makes me force close and open it to get a drop of a working app, I hate that I have to use other storage apps to manage files (when locations are available within the app - if it’s too difficult don’t include it), I hate how stupid and barebones the UI is, I hate that it aggravates me every time I want to just transfer files, I just hate it. When you see reviews talk about how the file system lets the iPad down, this is it. And you’ll tell yourself “well they’re content creators, they deal with huge files, it won’t be an issue for me!”, sorry, but the reality is it will and you’ll be pulling your hair out. This is absolute rubbish, and I feel like Apple has purposefully kneecapped their file system on the iPad so it doesn’t directly compete with the Mac. I’m a scientist, I love my iPad to bring into the lab and read methods or get some knowledge that is helpful for me in the moment; when I want to do some heavy data analysis I will always move to a bespoke Mac - there is no competition here, just aggravation and stupid decisions. Fix your app, this is the worst experience I’ve had with an Apple product.
