A recent update to the app introduced a change that may disappoint longtime users. A key feature — adding custom news sources — now costs $1 per custom source you want to add. This feature had been free until the update.

Also, the app sometimes starts playing spontaneously in the background, e.g., during an important meeting or while you’re asleep. To prevent this, force-quit the app when you’re done using it.

I have experienced issues with the Hourly News app starting all by itself without provocation on my iPhone 13 Pro Max with at least the last three updates to its iOS.

Moreover, it does this even after closing the app and swiping up, trying to avoid the issue, without avail.

The developer fixed an issue that was causing the app to crash, and it’s working again!

Hourly News was one of the first apps I purchased, many years ago, and I still use it every day. It does exactly what it’s designed for, and it’s designed very well.

Great selection of sources. You can order them any way you want. It plays in the background, and when the phone is locked there are playback controls you can use without unlocking.

The app’s screen is black, very easy to see, and great when driving at night. The main control is a giant Play/Pause button — so if CarPlay or navigation interrupts and pauses playback, it’s easy to tap without being distracted.

Hourly News is an outstanding app. Very highly recommended.

As of this week, the app stopped working. Please fix it.
