Over 70 million people speak the Persian language. Persian also known as Farsi is of the Indo-European language. It is spoken and used officially in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It is written in Iran and Afghanistan with the Persian alphabet, a derivation of the Arabic script, and in Tajikistan with the Tajik alphabet, a derivation of Cyrillic.

이란(페르시아)을 중심으로 타지키스탄, 아프가니스탄, 바레인, 우즈베키스탄, 파키스탄, 러시아 등지에서 7~8,000만 명의 화자를 보유한 인도유럽어족 인도이란어파의 언어. 아랍어, 터키어와 함께 중동-서아시아 지역의 주요 언어로 자리매김했다. 일반적으로 타지키스탄에서 사용되는 '타지크어'와 아프가니스탄에서 사용되는 '다리어'도 페르시아어에 포함되는데, 그도 그럴 것이 세 언어는 방언 수준의 차이밖에 없기 때문.
Persian은, Farsi라고도 한다. 이란어라고도 하는데, 엄밀히 말하면 이란어는 Iranian Languages라 하여 “이란어파”에 속하는 여러 언어들의 총칭이다. 영문 표기만 봐도 Iranian Language라고는 잘 안 하고 Persian Language라고 한다. 좁은 의미로 “이란의 공용어”라는 관점에서 “이란어”라고도 하는 모양이다.
