Works on Apple Watch which is awesome. And it’s free?! The set up was easy. They can even import QR codes from screenshot(s) if you save to the photo(s) library, if you have to use the same phone, because otherwise it gets tricky. Great UI. Thank you devs!

Unless Proton Authenticator is in slide over view or 1/3 screen Split View, it was only showing six entries, and searching for entries past the first six did not work (at least on iPad Pro 13). Today it seems to be working ok, so the app is flakey. Also, Proton Authenticator will backup codes to iCloud, but in order to enable the “Sync between devices” option, a Proton account is required. However, the iCloud “backup” *syncs* across devices, so if all your devices are Apple, then all your codes can be visible on all your devices. I went to Proton’s web site and it was not immediately evident how to file bugs there.

Do not use v 1.1.3 this isn’t ready yet - deletes entries when you try to edit the entry name (title). No auto-sort, although one can drag the entries on macOS and edit in an account name in the Title. Syncs nicely with my proton account across all platforms and devices, but twice now on updating entry (editing) the title in macOS I got an error message and when I closed and re-opened the app it had deleted that entry entirely!! If I didn’t have a backup I could have been locked out of that account as it had already synced the deletion across devices.

it is a great start to a new(ish) product in the Proton family. if you enable icloud sync and you sign in using your Proton account, this app can be downloaded on multiple devices! currently it’s on my iPhone, iPad, Watch, and my Windows PC! 

my only note is that i wish there was better organizational methods, like organize via Name or Type. as some other users have said, the UI can stutter a little. 

i also have experienced duplicate codes whenever scanning a new QR Code to enable authentication. a quick delete of the duplicate solves it but to the less tech savvy this could cause confusion.

Looks great but since I can’t import several accounts from the Microsoft Authentication app I probably won’t be switching.
The MS app will export a csv file, but the Proton app cannot import data in this generic format.

Imported from the export of another 2FA app. About half of the codes show "No Issuer" with no other info about what service they are for, which makes this unusable unless I go through each one, figuring out what service it's for, then adding a name. When importing, if there isn't an issuer, the field should fall back to Name or another field that would allow you to identify who the code is for. Appreciate ProtonMail adding more services, but it needs to work better if you want people to migrate.

I spent an afternoon going through Proton Authenticator & comparing it to several other 2FA Auth apps. All are sort of similar, but Proton Auth has some equal or better features, especially for a 1.0 & for free. Some more mature 2FA apps are better. I used both the iOS & MacOS apps.  The MacOS app says it is an iPad app. 

Good:
[] Import works well. (From Auth apps that support export).
[] Export works well. Via DropBox, AIrDrop, etc. (Can also use export an an alt backup.)
[] Backup to iCloud.
[] Multi-device Sync (requires Free or Paid Proton account).
[] Easy to use.
[] Free version, also paid subscription. 
[] Can export to file, then re-import to different device. This is a way to “manually sync” your devices without exposure to any particular cloud service.
[] Separates 2FA Auth from Password manager.
[] Can edit name of each 2FA record.
[] Click to copy auth code.
[] Available for Mac & iOS, also Android, Windows, etc. 

Bad:
[] Bug in Mac version can’t save imported entries. Auto-deletes all imported entries at quit. [] Can not save edits in imported entries either. Still an issue in v 1.1.1(3) on Aug 6, 2025. 
[] No push notification when 2FA code is received. (You’ll need to remember which Auth app to open & which entry).
[] Multi-device Sync requires Free or Paid Proton account.
[] Free Proton account is fine to start, but you may outgrow it & need the paid account.
[] Non-optional display of next 2FA code in app. This may give a shoulder surfer enough time to attack. Would be better as an optional preference.
[] No sync via iCloud. Only backup.
[] Exported JSON file is plain text. Easily readable in any text editor. (This could also be considered a good feature).

Overall I like the new Proton Auth app. I’m hoping that they can fix the can’t-save-imported-data bug.
