## Runestone Text Editor Description
A plain text editor with syntax highlighting, line numbers, search and replace, page guide, and much more. It's like TextEdit but more powerful and optimised for iPhone and iPad.

Runestone is made by a single person with a love for text editors and a vision of building the most lightweight text editor for iPhone and iPad that still has the core features for editing code.

Features:
- Syntax highlighting of many languages including HTML, JavaScript, JSON, Markdown, Swift, Python, PHP, YAML, and many more.
- Select one of the twelve standard themes including popular themes like Tomorrow, Dracula, Solarized, and One Dark Pro.
- Innovative find and replace for searching and modifying text while still viewing your file.
- Choose font and font size, including support for custom fonts imported using another third-party app.
- Show the line and column the cursor is located on.
- Uses the standard document browser for an experience similar to the Files app.
- Quickly navigate to a specific line.
- Automatically close opening brackets and quotes.
- Multiple windows on the iPad.
- Format code using Prettier.js. Supported languages include CSS,HTML, JavaScript, JSON, PHP and more.
- Choose text encoding between popular encodings like UTF-8, UTF-16, ISO Latin 1, and many more.
- Enable or disable autocorrection, autocapitalization, and smart punctuation.
- Set default file extension of new files.
- Open files in Runestone from the Share Sheet.
- Print documents.

- Increase line height and letter spacing.
- Disable line wrapping to allow horizontal scrolling.
- Show tabs, spaces, and line breaks using a selected symbol.
- Enable page guide at a specific column to easily tell when lines are getting too long.
- Add vertical and horizontal overscroll.
- Remember the selected language per file.
- Save file extensions and filenames that should always be treated as plain text files.
- Enable soft tabs and choose the width of the tab character.

### ***** "Great editor, wish I'd found it earlier"
Overall this is the best editor I've used on the iPad and represents excellent value for money. The only option I would like is to be able to turn off the auto save feature. I know this is kind of an Apple thing but I still prefer to have an indication that I've modified a file and then chose whether to save or not. Apologies if I've missed an option. Apple should take some inspiration from the file browser which auto connects to servers so much better than the files App.

I love the app but many of the languages I hoped to use it for are missing: assembly (x86, WAT), Objective-C, Kotlin, etc...
I would love a feature to add custom or missing languages by defining a list of syntactic rules, a feature I would happily pay for premium to use

App version: 1.5.2
iOS version: 17.7.1

When making a new file the save button doesn’t work and sometimes crashes. To replicate, open the app press the + make a file name, choose the extension and press save. The save button recognises the interaction but nothing happens.

Otherwise 5 star app! It’s lightweight and good for ideas on the move if I’m not at my computer I can just save it and finish on my computer.

Half of the features are behind a paywall. The main reason I wanted this app was for syntax highlighting and horizontal scrolling, however the latter was only in premium. Even without that, when I created a Python file and pasted in some code that used to live in my notes, for some reason pressing backspace would immediately crash the app, not allowing me to do any editing or move forward. Please fix this.

Update: it’s now magically fixed.

I just downloaded it, and it works really well for the things I’ve tried do far, except YAML. It doesn’t keep the indent level on new lines and it doesn’t support tabs for indenting. These bugs aren’t so bad, but I find them very annoying when I’m trying to write YAML files with any sort of indenting.
I don’t really mind the part about tabs, but it’s very hard to use without it automatically indenting lines according to previous ones, which seems to me like a very basic requirement.
Other than that, its a very good app for text editing, Plain and Code alike.

I’ve only just installed this by so far is seems really good.  It’s a proper text editor with word wrap and encodings and line endings, with easy ability to change font size, it also syncs to iCloud out of the box. Also in the free edition, no endless annoying ads, so far brilliant.

The first thing I was offered after purchase was a refund, but I didn’t select that, because I hadn’t tried it yet. Then the very first thing I tried to do (Copy/Paste from another text file) proved impossible! NOW I want a refund, but of course now that option is no longer available. Scam.

My 3* review could be increased, if the developer could please explain how when both saving or searching for files. The user can navigate folders etc similar to the Files application? By default this App saves to Apples iCloud which could possibly be an Apple restriction. For my phone I have configured multiple connections G drive, Dropbox etc also to my NAS. If this app could navigate already active connections to view and edit files I’d be happy to 5*

This is a wonderful, well-designed, and elegantly simple app. I take most of my notes in markdown and store then in iCloud and often want to view / edit them on the go. The editor is a pleasure to use, has basic code editing features, syntax highlighting, dark mode support, basic auto completion (e.g. automatically adding closing delimiters to the right of the cursor). Have tried other text editing apps but they are clunky and a pain to use. I very rarely write reviews but felt compelled to do so since I see this has relatively few downloads and is such obviously high quality. I have no doubt it will be a success. Thanks for the great app!

With the advent of Chat GPT I needed a tool to store code snippets and chats with code snippets on my iPhone.. got sick of the mess notes made of it so Runestone works brilliantly for this!

 No idea what the code editing experience is like but why write raw code when an AI can do it for you.  
 
The premium purchase was also a given for me.
