For daily use, a very simple interface displays the level of exposure: if orange or red, protect your ears !
Professional users will take advantage of a wide range of accurate and reliable measurements: Leq, peak, L10, L95, taktmaximal, frequency analysis, histogram, dosemetering, ... A&C weightings are compliant with ANSI® S1.42 standard. "468" refers to ITU-R 468-4

*** Some KEY INFORMATION *** :
- you absolutely need to allow access to microphone to use this App
- screen rotation must be un-locked

- do not expect to measure as low as 0dB(A) in a quiet room, for these 2 reasons: 30-130dB(A) is the standard usable range for sound level meters and anyway a standard quiet room is around 30dB(A) whereas a typical anechoic chamber is 10 to 20dB(A)

Top digital display is for measurement of sound power in 'slow' mode (averaged on 1s). Central analog display is for 'fast' mode (averaged on 1/8th s). But it can display 'slow' mode as well on request: just click on 'fast' label.
Peak and average values are displayed below and are held until you touch the 'reset' label. The videos on Youtube reveal more details.

Bottom view is a real time FFT (frequency analysis). You will notice that predominant frequency and next one are highlighted. Their frequencies and relative power are displayed on the right. If your input signal is a pure tone then this App will lock on its frequency and display a very accurate result.
Green line is the result of a real time FFT done with 1024 points. Purple line is the averaged FFT (exponential filtering done on power of each frequency). Blue line is a copy of what the purple line was when the user froze the display the last time.
A test tone at 1kHz or a white noise or a pink noise can be generated and sent to right and/or left outputs (select the type you want in BEEP tab). This FFT view - more precisely an upsized version of it - can be exported as a picture in your own photo library, using the camera button (when display is frozen only).  This picture can be exported in a mail as well.
The display can be flipped upside-down to ease reading: just rotate your iPhone while holding it vertically.

As for ALL sound meters (thus including this one and all others at any price), calibration is suggested if you want to reach extreme precision. This is enabled in this App thanks to a slider to apply some compensation and to three non volatile memories (choice to be made in MIC. tab). How to ? For calibration, you need and external reference, either a calibrated sound meter, or a calibrated noise source.
Note as well that the tiny embedded loudspeaker cannot reproduce extreme frequencies. Thus if you want to hear a real white or pink noise, you will need to use a quality headphone or HiFi system.

This App was designed seriously for our own needs, by a signal processing expert, and is regularly updated to maintain accuracy and reliability.

Very happy with performance of app! Using to balance sound levels between Music Keyboard and Simply Piano online lessons. But main objective is keeping listening volume at safe levels, preserving my hearing and preventing worsening tinnitus.

I am very careful with my hearing in loud environments. This App is excellent for reading loudness levels throughout my day. I sometimes work around an airport. I always protect my ears. It's nice to know what these loud situations could be doing to my hearing at the convenience of my smartphone.

Update: I have had this App for over 8 years and still love it. The developer has maintained it all this time. So extremely happy for this. 
I used it recently when I was at a Wedding Reception. They seated us next to the speaker. I thought I was going to die. It read 96-97 db’s. I showed the people at my table how loud it was. They were surprised. And also showed them this can cause hearing damage if we are to sit here the whole night. 
Anyway, got out of that situation before the exposure limit. So useful. Thanks again!

Wouldnt download. I purchased app for $5 usd like a dummy. There’s no in app support. The data you can export is extremely limited csv. Other apps allow you to video record w/audio db levels. Even though I paid for the professional version of this app it will not unlock the feature. It’s a scam. Cant even contact developer in app.

I use this app several times a year and have used it for many years. It is a fantastic reliable and useful app. I highly recommend it. 

It’s very helpful when measuring speakers, general levels of noise if I’m in an audience, and I even use it with over the ear headphones (I just get the mic-end of the phone as close I can where my ears would reside within the earpiece to get a general idea so I protect my ears). 

If you don’t have a dedicated spl meter (or don’t carry one around with you) I recommend you get this. You won’t be disappointed. 🙂

I’ve used this app for several years, it’s extremely accurate. I use it mainly for live music inside a club venue. This app stays reliable and steady along with upgrades of phones. 
I’ve found zero inconsistencies. 
It does help me show guitar players that their stage amp is louder than the PA.

I spent many hours researching/testing apps that measure SPL and have 1/3 octave frequency analysis. This is my top, and only, current favorite ... now that V6.2 provides the option to view 3rd octave energy levels so Pink noise fed into the mic jack is now flat within a fraction of a dB on my iPhone6. With my Dayton Audio iMM6 external mic the freq resp matches my class 1 meter within +-2dB from 50 Hz to 16 kHz. With the internal mic the response matches my class 1 meter within +-3dB from 100 to 6300Hz (with -4dB at 50 Hz and rising to a peak of +8dB at 12.5 kHz before falling back to near 0dB at 20 kHz). 

The apps features are very thorough and beautifully implemented. One of many examples ... with the pause feature you capture two spectra which makes essential comparisons easy. 

As an SPL meter app it is better than any other I have found. With both a digital readout and an analog meter (with multiple scale options) ... Including the most useful 20 to 130 dB scale. Not to mention all the weighting and response time options ... And showing the min/max and proper ave on the same screen is a great help. 

Suggestions for future improvements include:
- extend 3rd oct down to 20Hz
- allow mic freq cal curve
- when sending results to e-mail fill in address to be same as prior time (or provide way to enter a default address)
- bar graph scale and cursor labeling is OK but some other apps are a bit clearer.

Seriously the best SPL & FFT app, BAR NONE!  Self-calibrate to improve accuracy!  See sound ratings with A, B, C, and ISO-498 weightings, fast and slow response.  Average over time.  Active 30 second SPL graph.  Fast Fourier Transform shows SPL (sound pressure level in decibels/db) vs Frequency (Hz).  L95 shows "background noise" level.  Dosemeter displays simplified "quiet," "moderate," "loud" and what is a dangerous level.  More features than a store bought or professional SPL meter, for hundreds of dollars!!!

For most uses, A-weighting is close to human hearing.  Fast shows impulses, slow shows average sound energy.  B-weighting is defunct, C-weighting is often referred to as "unweighted," though it is slightly weighted.  To be used mostly for calibration of audio equipment.

All jokes aside, this app really is quite honest at letting you know what's hitting the room, what's coming out of the speakers and hitting your ears, etc. 

The only "gripe" (and that is a stretch to even call it that) is it takes a little while to figure out what all the little semi-hidden functions on it do. 

IMHO, this is one of the best dB meters out there. It is accurate and STABLE <--- that's a major plus
