Hello Good Guardian Folk Your journalism is par excellence. My main concern is the sustainability of your product. Presumably adverts underpin business viability. Donations send a mixed message to me. If you depend on donations then the product viability must be marginal? Which is a concern for journalists and readers. I presume that the dilemma is that you want big readership to attract advertisers; if you switch to subscription then readership goes down and advertisers are less interested to pay? I am a former economist, now retiree/pensioner, and appreciate quality journalism and an editorial policy that embraces good science, including climate science, good economics, good social values etc. You are in quite a different paradigm to News Corp, who continue to pay journalists to pander to climate denialists and alt-right politicians. I encourage you to maintain the timeliness, investigative skill, honesty and integrity of your journalism and editorial policies; civil society needs you and the planet needs you. Kind regards Glenn

Years ago, I subscribed to the Guardian, unbeknownst to me and according to my wife the subscription was automatically renewed during that time due to ignorance I did not explore my ability to read the Guardian on line.   Ooooops, my misunderstanding not checking a bank account. Now in perusing the site as a member, I realise I gain almost the same insight into issues as I would as a none subscriber through the internet. 

We learn by mistakes, keep up up the good  journalism and I will keep my money.

### ***** "Reading the news today"
I first encountered the guardian while surfing in the Channel Islands and staying with a surfer friend who worked for a local paper there. He carefully explained how The Guardian was highly respected by journalists and I wondered if his career would take him there one day. When The Guardian appeared in Sydney I was curious to see how it performed but was disappointed by the coverage of the Covid epidemic. 
The Guardian redeemed itself several times a week by doing great stories on matters of interest to me because the details were accurate and advanced my interpretation of events. 
Some stories didn't really make the grade that it had set itself but that eventually gave me the message that there were often tough subjects in our troubled times.
That in itself is news in my opinion. I like the New Yorker's zany humour and the Taipei and Straits times introduce new Asian writers . The coverage of legal cases is fascinating because their Courts disrupt their predictions often. I only mention this because I like the Asian approach to news and literature. I think they aren't so stuffy as the Western media. They do try to call for reforms that don't work well so one gets an insight into who is trying to call the tune.  If I can't understand what our media is doing I do turn to The Guardian to find out what is really happening. So thanks for the chance to tell you how The Guardian makes my life more interesting.

Aside from the great content, there are bugs in this app - clicking on a link in app often leads to the wrong story. I pay a subscription to use this and expect basic link functionality like this to work, at the very least. A restart will sometimes fix it but the problem comes back quite often with new content. Latest changes to the way the app works are terrible. There is so much garbage on the landing screen now with no way to properly customise the experience. Have now unsubbed after years (decades) of supporting this paper and its app in the vague hope others will do so too and they’ll have to reinstate customisable features once again. Very poor way to treat hard won customers, Guardian.

Updated: reduced rating by one star. 

Basic app functionality is failing when it was never a problem before. Selecting a news item/story opens a different story. Need to keep closing the app and restarting so the links open the story selected. 

Still too many gaps/white space on the page - means more unnecessary scrolling to get to content. 

Number of grammar/wording errors are getting embarrassing, often in subheadings. No checking or editing prior to publishing anymore? Come on - there are tools to check these things. Just sloppy.

Headings/headlines are becoming more “click baity”.

This is my primary source of “news”. Enjoying the content on the whole but the buggy app and drop in quality checks in writing has me considering cancelling my subscription.

Not sure the app and content represents good value anymore when considering the huge jump in the cost of an annual subscription… The layout is broken. Latest version has large amounts of wasted onscreen white space between article headlines and photos. “My Guardian” has massive white margins that waste screen real-estate, as well as all the white space between article headings and photos. The huge purple ad for Wordiply takes up half the screen and can’t be hidden. While I can understand that poor grammar and spelling can happen in the haste of posting content to live blogs, the writing quality of standard articles continues to fall… editors, either human or AI should be picking up errors before these articles are published. Reviews, particularly 4 and 5 star reviews for streaming programs sometimes read more like advertisements. Perhaps these need to be labelled with a “paid review / advertisement” tag, or need to be balanced by a review from another reviewer, as happens for many films. Would love the option to hide articles that I’ve already read - or don’t wish to read…

BUG: In landscape mode, links (for example, “More on this topic” related articles) are missing from live updates.

NOTE: This review is about the subscribed version.

PROS:
It has a beautiful and uncluttered layout, made even better with the redesign - check out the screenshots.

Excellent coverage of coronavirus news - the “Coronavirus: at a glance” summaries are terrific if you want intermittent updates of the most important developments.

Live coverage of major news events and if you tap on “Get alerts for this story” then you’ll get a notification every time there’s a major new development - very useful.

You can customise the home screen so you get the sections you want in the order you want.

I like the addition of the search icon to the top-left of the homescreen.

If you’re sick of news that’s sensationalised and full of hate, then the Guardian’s level-headed news coverage and good-humoured opinion pieces will be a breath of fresh air.

Regular updates to squash bugs and improve the app - for example, during live coverage, we can now tap on a Key Event to go directly to that post.

HOW TO MAKE IT BETTER:
Remove the bottom-bar - one bar is enough. Move the “Home” “Discover” “Live” buttons to the top-bar.

Reduce the side margins - in landscape mode and portrait mode, the text takes up around half the width of the screen.

Change the “__ minutes/hours ago” format to the actual time that the news was updated.

Move the comments-button to the top-bar.

Move the font-button from the top-right corner to the settings - once the font is set we pretty much leave it alone.

Space out the icons in settings, so it's easier to tap the correct one.

Add the option to follow a column, so that we still get notifications even if the author changes.

The comments section is substandard: no editing function, no thumbs-down option, no notification of replies - those features should be there. Maybe use a third-party like Disqus instead.

Put captions underneath each photo, so that we don’t have to make a photo full-screen to see the caption.

On live updates, add an “X” to the top photo so we can close it, to prevent having to keep scrolling down to read new entries.

Add a “go to top” button on screens with live updates, so that we don’t have to scroll all the way back up after reading an old post.

CONCLUSION: An essential news app - 5 stars.
