There are a huge number of movie formats, and VLC can convert most of them - but it can't convert everything. If you have any doubts, then please try the free version of this application first.

Works like no other player, nearly flawlessly, but the interface is bit chunky, especially the Windows part (eg. No list of cached movies, no option to remove them withouth digging through directories). It also gets stuck when filling up the hard drive during conversion. There's also no way to pick file on PC withouth going there, wish you could just pick a directory, scan it, and later on pick the movie for streaming from iPad. 
So: windows client: 2/5 stars.
iOS client: 4,5/5
