I love YNAB’s budgeting approach. I love that it is a mobile friendly solution. I don’t love the software updates. It seems they don’t know what they want in an UI and they’re just guessing at where to put things. No matter how they change things, it still feels inconvenient and more difficult. The app also has maddening delays and DRAINS my phone battery. I would just love to see something more like an Apple native app. Better performance and less blocking the UI for operations that SHOULD be done in the background. And what is it with the plan and spending views not being in sync? Why would I have to pull down to refresh between two views in the same app? Again, maddening.

I have worked nearly 30 years in a government budget office and can’t make heads or tails of this budgeting app. Its user interface is pretty to look at but very unintuitive to use. Also, it has no ability to track and analyze past expenditures, which is kind of important to preparing and managing a budget! If for some reason you like this approach to budgeting, you would be better off buying a couple dozen  envelopes, writing spending categories on the front of each one, and filling them with cash at the beginning of each month to spend from. The app provides little additional value, costs over $100 per year, and is very clunky to use.

I was always bad with finances but with YNAB everything is made so much smoother and easier. Everyone I’ve recommended this too also seems to love it. The only thing is there is a learner curve for those who aren’t familiar with budgeting in the envelopes idea. If anyone sticks it out for a few weeks to a few months, they will ALWAYS love it. I’ve stuck with it for the last 3 years and don’t plan on leaving soon. I’ve shown this to about 4 of my friends all who love it but always ask for me or watch their help videos when they started out. It’s great to help you realize what you’re spending money on, how much you WANT to spend, and has good documentation and ideas for your budget. Never would I have thought I’d have a full category for new tires in case something blew up, but I do!

YNAB is the worst financial program now. 10 years ago it was the best but now fast-forward 10 years later. The company is now in the garbage can.  They have made so many software changes in the last five years that they have fundamentally gone against everything they originally believed in.  This company literally just laid off their entire marketing team.  They fired their social media team.  And their CEO continues to take this company.  The responses that we get from these software updates are canned and written by AI. There is nothing human about this company anymore.

YNAB takes a little while to get used to, but for anyone wanting total control and oversight over their finances, and if you’re open to being hands on, this app is incredible and for once in my life I’m not nearly as stressed about finances. I’m still not rich but at least I know exactly what my financial situation is at all times. Love the envelope method.

I’ve been a long time subscriber. The constant UI changes are getting on my nerves. Once you get used to them, the devs completely change the app for no increase in functionality or purpose. I would consider different budgeting apps

The new changes were unwanted, not intuitive and threw me for a loop with trying to figure out how to put in a credit card payment. The clear button used to be so easy, now it’s an extra click. It seems YNAB forgot to do usability testing.

You now have to do multiple clicks to clear a transaction. The interface was good, now it’s clunky looking. I wish they would keep it simple. It wasn’t broke before, it didn’t need to be changed.

Update: 6/15/26 well their customer service is run by AI and doing a poor job. I emailed asking a question about wanting to cancel but I wanted to make certain I would avoid a refund back on my original form of payment that I no longer have the account for. Their “customer service agent” did not answer my question nor confirm if I wanted proceed with cancelling my subscription. They CANCELLED my account and I didn’t even have time to download my latest account file. It would have been 9 years down the drain had I not downloaded a copy 3 days before. Customer service is a joke.

I’ve been using YNAB for around 5 years now and it has been such a useful tool as I’ve become for financially literate. Highly recommend checking out their podcasts and YouTube videos along with the app.

YNAB use to be great 10 years ago. Fast forward to 2026 the company is going down the drain. The CEO fired their social media team and it has backfired spectacularly. YNAB would rather add more clicks to a workflow then give you a strategy to pay down credit card debt.  This company is not helping me anymore.

Every software update will introduce new bugs that were not tested before.  There is no plan to pay off credit cards.  I absolutely hate this app but I am so ingrained into the methodology.   The CEO is killing this company fast.

Love this budget program. I wish I would have had this many years ago. Are bill are payed each month and we owe no one. Our credit score is 838. The highest it has ever been. Thanks to my daughter who helped train us on YNAB. There is a learning curve, but after 6 months we have it down.

I’ve been using YNAB for over 10 years, it’s the best way to manage spending and budgeting I’ve ever found. I used spreadsheets and then quicken prior to this. Other methods could tell me where the money went, but they didn’t help me save for future expenses like unexpected car repairs or gifts or travel. The difference is that YNAB helps plan where the money will go in real time and helps me make decisions about spending going forward - as in do I want to spend on travel vs clothing. The only downside is that there is a bit of a learning curve, but it’s so worth it. I’m over 60 and recently retired and it’s been great to help me feel comfortable with spending in my retirement years. I also used it to manage spending for a small business.

I’ve been using YNAB for almost 10 years now, but will have to look for an alternate. The last few rounds of design updates make the app almost unusable. Gratuitous UX choices make the key components difficult to find and add taps where they don’t need to be. Not sure what they’re trying to prove, but it’s certainly not that they’re thinking of their users.

The app and platform used to be the be all, end all for budgeting, but over the past few years has gotten progressively more expensive, and even more convoluted.  If you are already in the YNAB environment, the app is well made, but if you are looking for a budgeting solution as a new user, I would implore you to look elsewhere, to a company that still cares.
