A2M real-time Audio to MIDI

AUv3 plugin and standalone app

Description

A2M detects the pitch of the audio and converts it into the corresponding MIDI notes in real time.
Thanks to this, you can play, e.g., the guitar, saxophone, or even sing, and simultaneously trigger sounds in virtual instruments (not only AU). These acoustic (or electric) instruments, or your voice, act as a MIDI controller.
A2M comes as an AUv3 plugin and as a standalone application (which is the AU host for this particular plugin).
The A2M is quite an unusual Audio Unit – it is both an audio effect and a MIDI effect. Due to its characteristics, it is something in between. On the one hand, it analyzes the input sound, just like any audio effect. On the other hand, it generates output MIDI events, just like any MIDI effect.
AU Hosts compatible with A2M Audio Unit:
• Audiobus
• AUM
• apeMatrix
A2M does not work as an AU plugin in GarageBand.
The standalone version works with all MIDI-compatible applications, including GarageBand.
The app sends MIDI events via the virtual MIDI port. The list of active and inactive MIDI ports is available in the application settings in the MIDI Settings → Outputs section.
Parameters
⁍ Host
▸ Audio input buffer size
The smaller the buffer, the higher the CPU load and the lower the latency.
A buffer less than 512 should only be set if you have a strong processor.
For A2M standalone applications, the buffer size is available in the application settings under Audio Settings → Buffer Size
⁍ Plugin
▸ Pitch recognition method
A2M offers two popular algorithms:
• Based on autocorrelation, the beat bars proprietary method
• FFT (with parabolic interpolation)
▸ Gate Threshold and Input Gain
A2M works best when it only recognizes sounds at an appropriate volume level.
In order to eliminate unnecessary background noises, select the appropriate value.
▸ Latency / Accuracy
2 dashes (default) – the best compromise between accuracy and latency.
The higher the accuracy, the more of the CPU’s capacity is used and the longer the latency (as opposed to the audio buffer size settings).
▸ Velocity Gain
It allows you to select the appropriate volume of the virtual instrument itself.
Known limitations in the current version:
• No polyphony
• No pitch bending
Requirements:
• iOS 14 or later

Expensive and does not work in Logic for IPad

I bought this hoping it would help me track basslines from Audio to MIDI but it simply does not work. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! Not sure if I can get a refund. I have been fiddling with it hoping to get it working for too long. Total waste of time.

This fixes the ‘lack of smack’ on my MIDI keyboard.

I have a Novation Launchpad 61 - other MIDI controllers/keyboards are available - and it has no control over velocity curves or even really, a fine-tune enough on the impact force on the keys. I was looking for a fix - raspberry pi or other complicated ideas - but I put this into the FX chain in GarageBand iOS/iPadOS and crank the RHS dial up a bit - works. I don’t think it’s meant to work this way in GB, but it fixes the problem I have where I really would have to hammer the keys to heck and back, to get a decent MIDI velocity level inside GarageBand. The keyboard has Lo, Hi and Off for velocity. On Hi it’s still pretty low MIDI velocity comes out - eg 55? And by the time I hit hard enough to get it higher, it’s too much force I think. Plus, it loses all ‘feel’, I cannot put any controllable nuance in at that karate-chop level of force. And ‘off’ for velocity setting, has the obvious drawback of being 100% ie 127 all the time. Either I can modify it later manually, or use ‘settings’ inside GB song DAW, but that means I cannot get ‘WYHIWYG’ (!) when playing. So, no sponsorship or anything, this effect app does the fix. 5 stars for that sole use case from me.

Not impressed.

I’ve tried the demo and it doesn’t seem very responsive.

Work well.

Nice and easy to use. Very handy tool to have in the box 😀 One downside is: It would be very handy if setup was saved in a presets when using with apps like AUM but unfortunately it only opens with it’s default setup and although you often need to adjust things it’s also very frustrating to come back and just keep setting it up as before.

I love this plugin

Like I said, I love this plugin. I used it to make a Pocket Miku sing to a Buddha Machine (check out the video on YouTube). It's also neat for creating interesting patterns on a drum synth (as kind of a "backing track" to an existing audio signal). Thank you for making this.

I like it, but I can’t figure out how to purchase it

I like this app a lot. It’s so straightforward and seems to work well. But I can’t figure out how to purchase it. There’s a restore purchase button but I can’t figure out how to pay it so it doesn’t shut off every few minutes. Edit: thanks. I guess I am licensed, then. Cool.

I like this app a lot. It’s so straightforward and seems to work so great pretty much anyway. But I can’t figure out how to purchase it. There’s a restore purchase button but I can’t figure out how to pay it so it doesn’t shut off every few minutes.

How to get it?
