Academy Members Reviews

Grateful this app even exists, but…

Does it really need to crash so hard that my phone restarts without my permission? The Academy can’t program an app that’s compatible with the latest iPhone? Really? UPDATE A YEAR LATER: I gotta say, i don’t love that Audio Description comes on without warning and isn’t easy to turn off, that rewinding and fast forwarding feels like i’m trying to do it on a DVD on the cheapest portable player available in 2001 (the standard for rewinding and fast forwarding is how Netflix does it, and not on a 1st Gen Apple TV, so i guess pay Apple or whoever for proprietary access to the bare minimum of what someone whose “privilege” it is to vote for these movies should have to endure), and that this app is only available on two digital storefronts. Streaming a phone to a TV isn’t the miraculous convenience everyone thinks it is. Other than the holy stink my family raises when i want to buy these movies to watch them in a format any better than a purgatory punishment i’m already staring down the barrel of thousands of years of, i genuinely believe that it’s worth buying each one on Prime, which is available on smart TVs and game consoles. Everyone likes to whine about Amazon, but other than the fact that they’ve hired thousands unlicensed drunks to drive their massive fleet of eighteen wheelers, they make things convenient and that earns my money. By contrast, in terms of user experience, the Academy Members app is basically a disaster. I’m only leaving it two stars because it seems slightly better for the environment than mailing hundreds of DVDs to every voting member of the Academy. (Not that DVDs even play with any reliable convenience on any current-gen hardware.)

Movies that were posted as 4K UHD are now showing as only HD after latest update. Academy should champion highest resolution available.
