Description

Learn the American English consonant and vowel sounds that typically trouble Chinese speakers, such as "n" as in "invent" or "sell" vs. "sale." First, learn how to position your mouth. Next, listen to different native speakers and repeat after them. Then play games where you must sharpen your American English sound discrimination skills to determine which sound was said. Did you hear rip or rib? fool or full? ladder or lather? Were the two words you heard the same or different? Of the three words you heard, which one was different? What words do you overhear at a loud party?
Once you learn to hear the difference between similar sounds that don't exist in Chinese, you will begin to produce the sounds correctly. Finally, hear the sounds in sentences and repeat them with the proper rhythm and intonation.
This free App has complete functionality for select sounds. In-app purchase is available for extra sounds that Chinese speakers need to practice. Please rate and review to help us keep what works and improve the rest.

American English Reviews

Easy to use, but lacking in effective pedagogical content

DJK73 on

Regardless which version of American English Pronunciation you download, the most they offer is some listen and repeat of random words and phrases and some traditional listening discrimination drills with items in random order. With no explicit focus on the sound being contrast for the target sound and no attention to the sound’s environment (the place in the word or the following sound), these apps are not as pedagogically effective as they could be. The graphic user interface is quite easy to use and fairly well designed, but the pedagogical content does not make these effective for a basic introduction to these sounds. Great Teaching Tool

I'm an accent reduction coach. When I get a new Chinese client, the first thing I do is have him/her purchase this App to work on sound discrimination skills. This saves the client time and money. Instead of having the teacher read them minimal pairs to test them, students can test themselves at home with this App. They can repeat questions they got wrong until they develop a fine-tuned ear for American English sounds. Then we can spend more time during our lessons on how to produce the sounds. Some of my students listen to this while taking a walk in the evening or sitting on a communter train. I ask them to practice for at least a couple minutes here and there, whenever they can fit it in. The more often, the better. They're learning to carefully listen for sounds that they never heard or paid attention to as a child.

Very Convenient

Thank you for sounds that I probably never say right. I think some of my English teachers never say these sounds right, so now I hear how word must be. It is simple and convenient app. It will not waste your time. It gets to the point and now I find out that I can't hear some sounds. So I will practice those ones. I like listen and repeat and same or different. If you update, please have more second to show words on screen. Maybe I don't read fast. And can you include "dwarf." Ii don't say right- maybe I say "dorf"
