Description

Step aboard and experience the port tour of Amsterdam Boat Cruises, official partner of Port of Amsterdam and become part of the present, past and future of the Amsterdam port. The place where everything is grand and compelling.
The port of Amsterdam is an inseparable part of the city of Amsterdam. It has made the city great thanks to its location, knowledge and composition of activities. In the coming years, the port will undergo a major transition in order to provide the city with clean energy as the "battery of the region". How? By reducing the use of fossil fuels and by focusing on more sustainable and circular activity. The port also offers as a place to live and work for the growing city.
Although Amsterdam developed into an important world port as early as the 17th century, the foundation of today's European seaport is laid during the emergence of the industrial revolution in the 19th century. In contrast to the Zuiderzee route, the new North Sea Canal offered a shorter, direct connection to the North Sea. This stimulated overseas trade and thus created the Amsterdam port region, which also includes the seaports of IJmuiden (Velsen), Beverwijk and Zaanstad.
After embarkation, the mooring lines will be released and you will get to know the 4th seaport in Europe through five generations of ‘Amsterdammers’. Their life course runs parallel to the development of the area and makes the adventure human and dynamic. As if you were there yourself!
NDSM wharf
Each side port that we pass has its own unique functionality and appearance. This already starts at the starting point at the NDSM shipyard in Amsterdam-Noord, where shipbuilding and repair has been taking place since 1894 and now the multinational Damen Shiprepair is housed.
Circular industry and energy transition
We look at the port in its current form, but also look ahead to the time when the port area will operate fossil-free and sustainable. We show the 'circular port' and you will hear more about recent and future developments of the energy transition.
The Amsterdam port region has a total of more than 800 port-related companies, traditional and progressive. Where once the Ford Mustangs and Datsuns stood on the quayside ready for European distribution, you can now pick up your new electric Tesla here. On a large scale hydrogen will soon be generated and distributed, we will store more and more biofuels in oil terminals and convert waste into energy for the Amsterdam metropolitan region.
