Best learning, reading, dictionary app for ancient greek!!
This app has been of such great value to the work and research I do in regards to Ancient Greek texts. The dictionary is the part I use the most, but all aspects are useful and easy to use. I hope that one day there will be an AI translator upgrade.
I use this app daily. It’s the full version of the big Liddell and Scott dictionary for a tenth of the cost if purchased through Logos Software.
2 July 2023: Sadly, the developer of this excellent app seems to have abandoned it, and some unique features, like reverse lookup (from English to Ancient Greek), no longer work. I wonder what might induce the developer to make the few adjustments that might be needed to reactivate such features? Perhaps the developer could be motivated by realizing this: there are very few tools for translating from modern languages to ancient. This is especially true for modern Greek versus Ancient Greek. In fact, this app was the best way for a modern Greek to discover Ancient Greek: translate modern Greek to English, then perform a reverse lookup from English to Ancient Greek. As far as I know this app offered the best and most convenient way to do this, and the loss of this functionality has proven to be irreplaceable. Strange as it seems, even in print, there are few, if any, dictionaries from modern Greek to Ancient Greek. There are plenty from Ancient Greek to modern, but they assume already knowing Ancient Greek or working with a historical text. If one wants to translate ordinary modern Greek to ancient, one is struck by the lack of tools to do so. Again, this app was the single most useful tool in this regard, made even more convenient by containing all that it contains on a device that is always with us. Apps get abandoned by choice; developers decide to cut their losses and decide to just let the software slowly rot into oblivion while they get on with their lives. Who can blame them? Still, in some cases, like this one, the software stumbles onto a greater utility, and deserves some extra attention. The user base for an app like this must be tiny. Even a paid upgrade would probably not earn much. I’m sure many or most of the original users would happily pay for the upgrade, but that certainly won’t cover much, let alone enrich anyone. The reason to update this is really more altruistic than mercenary: it can serve a unique role. The app was well conceived and excellent to begin with, so very little needs to changed. A few lines of code and a recompilation will probably be sufficient, and this short work will probably last a few years. It would be well worth the effort. Here’s another idea: perhaps the reverse-lookup aspect of the app can be spun off into a new app, and promoted for the purpose I have outlined. Its audience would then become not only the few people interested in Ancient Greek outside Greece, but all of the English-speaking modern
Good app to have as a lexicon on your phone. However, the English to Greek search has been broken for some time so that I am not able to select and use it.
Reverse and Beta Code search functions are not working anymore. Will this app receive future updates?
Reverse search dictionary will not work.
This and the Latin app are my go to dictionary apps while reading texts. The only issue I have is that the beta code and reverse search options seem to no longer work. Maybe this is an iOS update problem?? Running iOS 13.5.1.
Wow, five minutes with this app and it has ALREADY paid for itself! I, like many, am leaning koine, as opposed to classical, Greek and the dictionary has been indispensable!
After updating to iOS 13, I cannot switch between different modes in dictionary. Those little boxes are no longer responsive. My device is iPhone Xs. Please fix this problem.
