财神名为李诡祖，山东淄川五松山人。生日九月十七，成道日七月二十二。道教和民间称李诡祖为文财神、财帛星君、增福相公、增福财神、福善平施公。魏孝文帝时任曲梁县令，清廉爱民，去世后立祠祭祀。民间传说李诡祖为太白金星下凡，属金神。唐武德二年（619年），被唐高宗赐封“都天致富财帛星君”，唐明宗天成元年（926年）被赐封“神君增福相公”，元世祖（1295-1307）被赐封“福善平施公”。淄川五松山嬷嬷幢有祭祀李诡祖的“增福庙”和李相公墓。
“文财神”李诡祖在民间最受欢迎，古代木版年画上的财神像大部分是他，清代和民国期间钞票上的财神像也是他。他的绘像经常与“福”“禄”“寿”三星和喜神列在一起，合起来为福、禄、寿、喜、财。画像中的李诡祖文雅非凡，锦衣玉带，头戴朝冠，身穿红袍，白脸长须，面带笑容，一手执“如意”，一手执“元宝”或“聚宝盆”，写着“招财进宝”四字。身后二童子为他打着日月障扇。左青龙，右白虎，口吐孔钱和元宝，显得这位财神爷神通广大，有取之不尽用之不竭，源源而来的金印财宝。
