六爻预测是众多的周易预测学中派生出来的方法之一。它具有独自的体系，是一种理论非常完备的预测术。在中国做为应验很高的预测法而广泛流传于民间，深受预测师们的喜爱。而历朝各代都有许多人倾心于六爻预测，继承和发展这门学问，才使其流传至现在。探其源头，六爻预测可以追溯到两千多年前的汉代京房易。京房为汉代有名的易学家，他以《周易》为基础，巧妙地把阴阳五行和干支纳入了八卦，根据十二地支与卦宫之间相生相克的关系，配上六亲，创立了六爻预测的原始思路与方法，随后又经过各朝各代易学家的发展，成就了今天的六爻预测学。这种预测法是把干支纳入八卦后进行预测的，所以最初把它叫做“纳甲筮法”，但它是从《周易》的爻辞判断法演变而来，因此在此预测术出现当初，判断事物的吉凶时，还参考爻辞进行判断。后来由于受道教以及其他预测术的影响，预测师们在判断事情时，又加进了许多神煞，反而使预测术出现了混乱的局面。不过早期的预测方法只是掌握在少数人手里，一般的老百姓并不会用，一直到了宋代，一本署名为“麻衣道人”所著的《火珠林》问世后，才在民间广泛地传播开来。因此古时候把这种预测术也称之为“火珠林法”。但《火珠林》中所说的方法和现在的六爻预测术还有很大的差异，还没有月破、暗动之说，五行生灭十二状态的（即长生十二宫）的用法也不十分明了。此后到明代以及清代，是六爻预测的高峰时期，也是六爻著作创作的旺盛时期。这段时期的著作有《黄金策》、《断易天机》、《断易全书》、《断易神书》、《海底眼》、《易冒》、《易林补遗》、《易隐》、《卜筮全书》、《增删卜易》、《卜筮正宗》、《卜筮圆机》、《天玄断易》、《筮学指要》等等。
