Description
加藤磯足は、1747（延亨4）年に美濃路起宿の本陣問屋に生まれ、24歳で11代当主になりました。起村において、加藤家は、代々苗字帯刀を許された名家で、磯足は、若いころから村を治める中心的人物として積極的に村政に関わってきました。磯足の最も大きな功績は「木曽川堤の自普請運動」を先導したことです。天明年間（1781～89）に起村付近の木曽川堤防が危険な状態になったため、尾張藩に修築の請願を出しましたが、財政難のため工事は行われませんでした。そこで磯足は藩の許可をもらい、改修工事を自普請で実施。これが契機となり、各地で自普請が行われるようになりました。本作品を通じて、起宿を守った加藤磯足を知っていただけたら幸いです。
