佛门弟子都认为木鱼可以帮助他们修成正果，就纷纷效仿，将木鱼作为礼佛工具。木鱼又被佛家称为“木鱼鼓”、“鱼鼓”，也有的佛教流派称之为“鱼板”，是佛家弟子最常使用的礼佛工具。
木鱼之所以被引入佛门，成为重要的礼佛工具，确实是因为它的警示作用，但经文中记载的故事却不是它的真正来源，其真正含义在于鱼类的眼睛。
众所周知，鱼类的眼睛是无法闭合的，在佛教人士看来，这是一种时刻保持警醒的特征，正好可以用来警示佛门弟子，即修习佛法要像鱼一直睁着眼睛那样，不可有一丝一毫的懈怠，唯有如此，才能修成正果。
