自己調整機能(self-regulation)とは、奔放な行動の生起を抑え、刹那的な欲求は満たされないものの長期的には有益な結果につながる行動を選択させたり、自分の欲求には反するが社会的規範に沿った道徳的行動を導いたりする機能です。自己調整機能は、大きく自己主張行動と自己抑制行動に分類されます。自己抑制行動は、がまんできないに関連する行動を含み、運動調整、認知調整、対人関係調整の3つに分類されます。その調整の1つである運動調整を測定する課題が星形なぞりです。
星形なぞりは手の運動調整を測定する課題で、幼児期から小学校低学年の子ども達を対象とした課題です。二重線で書かれた星形の間を教示に従ってはみ出さないように１周することを求められます。
運動調整は幼少期に獲得され、認知調整、対人関係調整の基盤となると考えられます。また、先行研究によって、子どもの運動調整と遅延行動の選択との間に相関があることが明らかにされています。
