日语，又称日本语（にほんご、にっぽんご），日本国的官方语言。母语人口约一亿三千万，分为东日本、西日本、九州和八丈四种方言，与日本语相近的语种为琉球语（ウチナーグチ）。
三国时汉字传入日本，唐朝时日本人发明假名通行于女性之间，官方通行古代汉语即文言文，因此现代日本语受古代汉语影响极大。以昭和31年（1956年）的《例解国语辞典》为例，在日本语的语汇中，和语占36.6%、汉语占53.6%，昭和39年（1964年）日本国立研究所对90种杂志用语进行了调查研究，得出了和语占36.7%、汉语占47.5%、西洋语占近10%的结论。
日语的发音很简单、只有五个元音音素和为数很少的辅音。加上不常用的各种发音总共只有不超过100个。和日语发音类似的有西班牙语和意大利语。一般来说，这三种语言的发音中辅音与元音的比例接近1:1。日语的词汇十分丰富，且数量庞大，大量吸收了外来语。一般词汇（不包括人名和地名）有3万多个（1956年）。
