中学、高等学校における日本史の学習は、戦後の社会科の成立以来、社会科の中に「日本史」科目（終戦直後の一時期は「国史」という科目名称だったこともある）を置いて、日本史の通史を学習していた。
しかし1989年（平成元年）告示の学習指導要領で高等学校社会科が地理歴史科と公民科に分割されたことに伴い、この学習指導要領が適用された1994年度（平成6年度）第1学年からは、地理歴史科の科目として日本史を学ぶようになった。
1989年（平成元年）告示の学習指導要領では、日本史に関連する科目として、「日本史A」（2単位）と「日本史B」（4単位）の2科目を設置した。この科目構成は、1998年（平成10年）に告示され2003年度（平成15年度）第1学年から学年進行で実施された学習指導要領、また2009年に告示され2013年度第1学年より学年進行で実施された学習指導要領でも引き継がれている。
