We drove all over Alaska. We started out Anchorage to Denali and then back to Anchorage to Homer and Seward. It only goes one direction but we loved it. Saw lots of things not in the guidebooks. Not too much history. Funny stories. Loved the crappy glacier in Denali. Worth the purchase.
Disappointed
More music than information is provided. Alaska is storied with history, especially history of Alaska Natives and this app doesn’t touch on all that it could. Tern Lake to Homer is much better than the Talkeetna to Anchorage tour. As a local I was hoping for more. Some pronunciations are inaccurate.
Expecting more for the $$$
It gives you something to listen to driving Alaska’s vastness, but some narrations really left us both confused and scratching our heads. I agree climate change is an important topic, but a 5min narrative about it on our vacation? One suggested stop was just a local pond that had security cameras to help with obvious crime problems around. The directional routes contain the same recordings in case you were hoping for new info on your round trip. If you’re buying multiple legs, there’s a lot of information overlap. In the past, Gypsy audio guides had totally transformed our trip. We had more fun discussing the awkwardness of these audio clips than gaining any actual information.
Entertaining!
Alaska is a big state and this was an interesting and informative way to pass the time while driving in Alaska.
Perfect for our road trip!
We downloaded this app to listen to in the car while on vacation. It made for great stories, history and geography of the area. Absolutely loved it!
Fun Tours
Enjoyed driving to Seward, Homer, and to Denali. Another person didn’t like the music but we liked it. The chapters were easy to download. We had a great time.
Local Approved!
I recently downloaded this app to use with my family that was visiting from the Midwest. We listened to three narrated tours during their stay. It was enjoyed by all and as a local, even I appreciated the information and learned a few new things too!
We all agreed, aside from the fun facts shared, that the best part was all the personal stories that were included from a local resident. I recommend this app to locals if you're having family and friends visit or are a tourist coming here on your own. It might just “peak” your interest!
Better than nothing
This is no GyPSy guide. But with lack of other options and a lot of miles to cover, I figured I’d give it a shot. Overall, I would say it is a solid 4. Could definitely provide more info (and less reading from that Katherine something book, geez!) but two extremely annoying things took it down to 2 stars for me.
First, having bought all tours, the app does not allow you to select which one to download but instead downloads all of them. And each tour is really two separate downloads (one for each direction). I just happened to be starting with Fairbanks to Denali part and it meant I had to sit there and wait for ALL other tours to be downloaded. Literally ALL of them instead just the three I needed. What a waste of time!
The other extremely annoying part was the annoying music that would start playing at the f of EACH AND EVERY narration. Seriously? This meant that I had to switch back to the app (and in reality, keep the app always on) to pause this nuisance instead of having my maps app up or listening to music or podcasts or ANYTHING but that awful tune.
How are both of these not configurable/selectable? Very, very dumb.
There were also a few narrations that didn’t finish playing before switching to the next one (and I was going about the speed limit).
Until GyPSy or someone else comes along, this is your only choice. Not bad but a few things are just extremely poorly designed.
An easy to use tool to get the most out of our Alaska visit
