Description

The Beat the Microbead app is the fastest way to learn if your cosmetics and personal care products contain plastic ingredients. This app uses state-of-the-art text recognition technology. Just scan the ingredients of your products and check them for microplastics. Not only that, but you can also get to know microplastic-free brands certified by us.

How does it work?

It’s straightforward: you can scan products with four easy steps:
- Find the ingredients list on your product.
- Position the full list within your camera frame.
- Make sure the ingredients are clear to read.
- Take a picture to scan!

A traffic light rating system

- RED: Products that contain microplastics.
- ORANGE: Products that contain what we call “sceptical” microplastics. With this, we mean synthetic polymers for which there is not enough information available.
- GREEN: Products that do not contain microplastics.

Help us enrich our database!

Every time you add a product to our database, you help us build a case against microplastics. With every product information, we can create evidence and convince authorities about the extensive use of plastic ingredients. A bit of extra effort on your side makes you a part of the fight against microplastics in cosmetics and care products. So, go ahead, scan the barcode of your product and help us get some more information!

By adding the products to our database, you can also discover our certified microplastic-free brands. These brands have their entire range of products free of all known microplastic ingredients.

Why is it important?

Plastic in cosmetics is a global problem! Microplastics are hardly visible ingredients that pollute our planet & may pose health risks. These microplastics, hardly visible to the naked eye, flow straight from the bathroom drain into the sewer system. Microplastics are not biodegradable, and once they enter the (marine) environment, they are almost impossible to remove.

Sea animals absorb or eat microplastics; these particles are passed along the marine food chain. Since humans are ultimately at the top of this food chain, it is likely that we also ingest microplastics.

Using body washes or cosmetics that contain microplastics can put the ocean, ourselves, and our children at risk! With this app, you can get aware of this issue and make environmentally friendly choices.

A must-have for shoppers

Dr. Xav on

The app is criminally underrated and deserves a lot more love, I rely on it to tell me which products may contain plastics and I love it. I hope the app gets future updates with more features!

Awesome and educational!

GraceC97 on

An amazing app geared to helping the environment and helping keep plastic out of your products! Only improvements I can think of are that it would be nice to have a search bar to look for products if I don’t have them on hand with me to scan

Great for newbies, empowering!

bulletproof79 on

As a product junkie, I was completely unaware that Microplastics were so widespread. Quick way to check all your products by photographing the ingredient list and slowly learning what ingredients to look out for. Feels great that I can also contribute to the database! I wish I could scan the barcode first and/or search for products however, but you can do that on their website.

Doesn't know anything

Disappointed microbead hater on

Cool tech that scans your bath products barcodes and tells you if the product contains microbeads except it didn't find any of the products and I have and asked me to add them to the catalog. so I might as well read the ingredients from to box myself. my question is what do I need this program for if I still have to read the box? Plus is reading the ingredients that hard anyways.

Few recognized items, confusing to add an item to the list

Terrikinetic on

Hopefully the list of recognized items will expand. I added Bath and Body Works exfoliating hand soap (non-foaming) to the apps list. Based on the ingredients list, the product does not contain plastic microbeads. The 'microspheres' visible in the product are wax based. When adding a product, I couldn't type in the name, which seems odd, so I wonder if people will have to squint at a photo that I took of the products front packaging to decipher what it is... Also there's a toggle button to say if the product did contain plastics in the ingredients list, but it's not written if the toggle button being active means yes or no. Suggestions: -Add a way to input product brand and name. -Have a 'yes' or 'no' caption beside the toggle button for the question 'Does this product contain microbeads?' -Maybe it could be set up in the following manner: "Does this product contain visible beads? Yes/No" Followed by: "Are the beads made of plastic? *in smaller font 'Does the product contain the following ingredients:...'* Yes/No" This way your product description, (once it is added to the list,) could say 'This product contains visible beads which are NOT made of plastic'

Adding a product has terrible interface

boy_Terry on

I also discovered that my North American products were not found in the database. When I tried to add them, the interface was terrible, asking me if the product contains microbeads with a very ambiguous slider that was unclear whether it was yes or no. Uninstalling.

Not for Canadians

Twr12 on

I tried to scan no less than 10 products in my bathroom, all of which are large American brands and none of them were in the database. Not sure if this is the Canada specific problem or not.
