Description

Bookends is the reference management app you've been looking for.
The basic version offers:
• Search online sites directly (arXiv, Google Books, Google Scholar, JSTOR, the Library of Congress, PubMed, PubMed Central, and Semantic Scholar) or use the built-in browser (EZProxy-compliant) to download reference metadata and PDFs (access privileges required). Searches can return a maximum of 20 references, and only 50 references can be stored in your personal database.
• Use unique identifiers such as DOI, PMID, ISBN, or arXiv id to autofill references.
• View the text of PDF annotations in a note stream, and create your own with our powerful PDF markup engine.
• Barcode scanning, one per day.
• And many more features designed to help you discover, organize, and use reference information.
Standard, one-time purchase ($14.99):
• No limit on searches or importing.
Premium, yearly subscription ($14.99). Requires a Standard purchase.
• Cloud sync with all your iOS devices and Bookends for Mac (separate purchase).
• Share online libraries with colleagues.
• Scan documents with Mellel Mobile*.
• Create multiple libraries.
• Unlimited barcode scanning.
• Extract PDF annotations with deep links to annotations and text.
• Convenient UI to add PDF notes to the library.
• Automate your actions with Shortcuts.
* iPad-only. Requires a Mellel Mobile Premium subscription.
Subscription is for one year and has an auto-renew option. The subscription can be managed in iOS -> Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions. A subscription will renew if it isn't canceled at least 24 hours before the renewal date.
If the subscription is not renewed, Premium will be disabled but Standard will continue to work.

Bookends Reviews

The rip-off of the sync service

Enrico Pirani, MD on

Italy

Bookends is really a good software. The only problem is the marketing department or whatever person in charge to determining the price of the services. Is there a reason why you should ask 10$ per year for using the Cloud service ?? We already spend every month a charge for their Cloud why you should ask for money for using the same service? Theoretically I could understand a situation in which you offer us your own cloud service. So at the end we have to pay 60$ for the desktop version (indispensable for using this reference manager) plus the standard version for iOS 10$ and another yearly 10$ for the ‘Cloud Sync’. This is a total of 80$ (!) when you buy this software.

Standard vs pro vs desktop

sptramp on

Italy

The app is super and I suggest it, maybe one of the best on mac for reference management the but the politics of the selling is not entirely clear. Does the pro version requires extra 10 € once you have the standard or when you buy the pro you only pay the difference? Moreover information should be given about the sync with the desktop app. Even if you pay for the pro version the desktop app costs you additional 70€ if you want to have sync bibliography in multiple devices.

Irrinunciabile

Been using Bookends for Mac and iOS for a couple years now and it is rock solid. It allows me to have a huge library available everywhere and always in sync. Developers have been highly responsive and helpful.

Epic deep linking

I stumbled upon this in my pursuit of an app that allows nuanced deep linking to pdf pages across ios and desktop. I was blown away to find that bookends handles this very well. I am now embarking on the onerous task of swapping my general pdf library to bookends.

A really great app for academics

This is a great app. It’s actively maintained and updated, and the iPad app has all the bells and whistles like support for multi-window (which is a must if you want to read a pdf and add notes or keywords to the meta-data), slide-over, etc. It’s support for Apple Pencil hand-written notes is top-notch, much better than anything else I’ve tried (ReadCube Papers). All in all, a wonderful app.

Close to Perfection

After using Zotero for years, it took me a little while to get used to Bookends. However, it’s been well worth the effort. It does almost everything that Zotero does, plus a whole lot more. Additionally, it’s easier to organize, and is visually more appealing. The one thing I miss is how Zotero has a browser extension that makes it super simple to create a reference for a website with all the information pre-populated. If Bookends adds this feature, it will be the best reference manager I’ve ever used by a long shot. Altogether, Bookends extra features are endlessly satisfying and useful. And for those who are up for a little scripting, Bookends invites you to be creative! I love this app and am really enthusiastic about using it for years to come.
