Getting Better
Love the idea, seems they are working out some kinks (forcing two columns on paginated?! Or can’t zoom in on images?! Or can’t match system theme!?) but it’s a new app, so I’m looking forward to it getting better with each release.

The overall look of the app is fine and the fact that it’s independent is great. Limitations: no font choices except serif or sans. No ragged-right, text is always fully justified. No search. And when you get to the end of a chapter in scrolling mode, there’s this weird bug that means swiping doesn’t work any more. I’ll monitor it and hope for improvements, it’s early days yet. It’s not really usable for me right now due to vision issues.
A good functional alternative to kindle, supporting my local bookstore. I wish we could adjust the text brightness. Even when I have my brightness all the way down, it is still fairly bright. Hopefully something they can fix in future updates.
Love being able to support a platform besides Amazon. However, the formatting options in the app are problematic: - Page is weirdly narrow - Default line spacing too large - Large spaces between paragraphs—why is this even an option? - Not enough font choices Even if all these could be adjusted exactly as I wanted them, the biggest problem is: SETTINGS ARE FORGOTTEN EVERY TIME YOU OPEN THE APP. It’s a brand new app, so I have faith that these will be addressed. You gotta start somewhere, and this is a good start.
Trying to pivot to bookshop because of Amazon's locked ecosystem, and reliance on DRM/lock-in (which is unfortunately a wider symptom of the ebook arm of the publishing industry). I have a kindle but mostly read on my phone, and the kindle iOS app is great for that experience. I'm hesitant to make a full changeover so far but there's a good base here, and I'm all for being able to support local bookstores with ebook purchases. Things I don't love: - lack of fonts (Times New Roman is not ideal) - a gray colored text on the black background is better on the eyes for dark mode reading (my default) - wide margins that don't stretch as far to the edge of the screen as kindle app - text needs to be justified - laggy page turns - I'm not a swiper, I tap to turn the page, and the screen area to tap without bringing up the menu is really close to the edge of the screen, so I end up bringing up the menu instead of turning the page I'm excited to see how bookshop updates this app in the future, and any competition to the walled garden of Amazon ebooks experience is welcome. I hope this will be a regularly updated app from a UX/UI experience perspective!
I never leave reviews but I’m so turned off by the format of the books that I’m about to go buy the same book elsewhere just to have italics again. I’m trying to read Onyx Storm and it’s impossible to differentiate internal conversations between external conversations due to lack of italics. The fact that your are selling books and not including basic formatting is an abomination. I want my money back.
App is definitely still rough around the edges, but I’m encouraged by the progress made even in the first few weeks. I trust that the Bookshop.org team is working hard to improve the app and hey, never hurts to be supporting local bookstores.
It’s great to be able to buy ebooks ethically and support independent book stores. The app is solid and has all the essential features. But the typography needs a lot of work! The line spacing is much too large, so not enough text fits on the screen at once. And there is no extra space before a section break, so it is hard to tell when a new section begins.
I was initially very enthusiastic because you can buy non-DRM books through it However, I see no ability to highlight passages, or add notes It’s been decades since I’ve read a book (that I’ve owned) without highlighting passages, and usually adding a note or two, so I’m not understanding the market for this app I hope this gets rectified soon. I’d very much like to give the app a try.
I love this. Thank you for making space for ebooks. Please add more fonts and themes, especially OpenDyslexic. This is why I read an ebook. Also, add highlight features so we can highlight sentences that speak to us. Copy and share those sentences with friends on the internet. This is another way for us, ebook readers, to help writers market their books. Help us so we can help you too in the service you provide.
