Description

Buttercup is an open-source password manager, available on all major platforms. It helps you track and store your login information for any service you use - personal or for work - in a securely encrypted archive that you store where you want.
Buttercup archives contain groups and entries so that you can easily manage your login credentials. There’s also a desktop application and browser extension available, so you can access your archives and credentials on every platform you use.
All information stored within Buttercup archives is private and encrypted - available only to those with your master password. Keep this password secret and don’t use it for any other login! Once you have your login details stored within Buttercup, you can concentrate on remembering only the 1 password (for Buttercup) - all other passwords can be long, gibberish text to increase security, and you don’t have to remember them!
Buttercup’s features (non-exhaustive):
- Store an unlimited number of login details
- Save your archive to a variety of storage providers
- Autofill login forms
- OTP/2FA codes (adding and displaying)
- Open sites stored within the app by the touch of a button
- Open archives auto-lock and close after 10 minutes of inactivity
- Unlock archives using fingerprint authentication (or FaceID on supporting iPhones)
- Archive contents hidden when app is put to background
- Ability to add multiple archives
- Open archives in offline mode
- Search the contents of open vaults
Buttercup is designed to be used with free-to-use cloud storage providers, such as Dropbox, Google Drive and WebDAV-enabled services.
No information regarding you or your archive is sent to us or any other service. No in-app analytics are used and we rely on the completely anonymous service analytics provided by Apple and Google. If you have any queries please consult our privacy policy.

Buttercup Password Manager Reviews

Normally great, but this version dropped the ball…

Matt Jenner on

Buttercup is generally great and I love an open source password manager, but… we’re at my folks for Christmas, go to unlock my vault to log into my son’s Nintendo switch store… and…where’s my vault?! Argh… and I don’t have my Dropbox password with me… cue a ton of hassle resetting my Dropbox password to add the vault again while being hassled by an increasingly impatient 9yr old and now I’ve changed it I’ll probably forget it again and have to fix the connection to all my other buttercup installs on my laptop and PC! Please persist the Dropbox auth in the future if you update! This was a real pain when a lot of people are likely to be travelling and their phone is their only way to get their passwords!

Functional but seems to be lacking some settings

WebDAV works by you have to remember to put https:// on the front of URL as it doesn’t add automatically. App doesn’t have any settings for auto lock, so seems to stay unlocked indefinitely unless kill app completely or lock manually. It would be much more reassuring if app auto locked when you changed to a different app, possibly after 1 min but that could be a changeable setting. It would be really Useful to be able to add multi line notes to entries as a custom field.

OK but only has username and passwords

The app seems good but I need to store all kinds of information and notes so unfortunately it isn’t going to work for me

Good vault and wonderful potential

I’ve been using the pro version of Dashlane for a while now, after trying several other password managers. I found Buttercup pretty appealing, and i always tend to prefer open source softwares so I gave it a go. After creating a vault on Google Drive, I started to use buttercup exclusively to keep my new passwords. I’ve taken a star off because for some reason my vault simply disappeared; I guess the permissions to Google expired, I’m not sure what happened, but I’m glad I still kept Dashlane as a backup. It was a big disagreement as I had to start a new vault from scratch; I enabled the backup option this time. In any case, I don’t want to be too harsh and will rate 4 stars to continue support the development; there’s really a big potential and you guys are doing a great job! I’d also love an integration with Synology NAS, if that could be on the roadmap. Thanks!

Still unusable 7-26-22

Remove the beta stuff and add local import from apple files. Most of us already have kdbx files made and just need something to import it too. We don’t need it to sync to the cloud, if we wanted that we would get dashlane or lastpass

(Update: UnScrewed) it up….

Now that offline copy is once again a thing, it’s perfect for storing passwords and OTP. One these days I hope they’ll support file attachments like pictures and what not. As of now I just need to figure out where they hid the code scanner in this new version

Worked Fine Until 2.0

Dkt01 on

United States

Edit: Developer fixed the issue in 2.0.1 and the app works well again. After 2.0 update, my vaults were removed from the app and once I added them back, I can't unlock them again. Hopefully this gets resolved quickly because the app is useless at this point

Perhaps search functionality is broken

I’m not sure if it’s the update that cause the search function to be broken or the custom fields. Please fix the search functionality. Thank you.

So much potential, but so unstable

Cryltaur on

I love that Buttercup wants users to control their own data and host it where they want, with customizable account data and TOTP in one place. I love that it's free, open source software. However, I've rarely seen ANY iOS app crash this much. The UI also needs a ton of work. This isn't even ready for beta testing yet, let alone important user data.
