The successor of probably the nerdiest camera app ever made, ca-mera+ uses a cellular automaton to interpret the colors of your camera stream. The resulting images are pixelated and contain unique patterns created by cellular automata. The output can be black and white, or one of several retro color palettes (CGA 4 and 16 colors, 1-bit RGB, etc.).
This app provides "selfie" and "split" modes, records video, and lets you change the appearance of the pictures by controlling the automaton application direction, its rules, the resolution, the input brightness, and the input fidelity (i.e. to which extent the cellular automaton is allowed to run freely).

ca-mera+ FAQ
Is ca-mera+ free?
ca-mera+ is not free (it costs 2.99), however it doesn't contain in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Is ca-mera+ legit?
Not enough reviews to make a reliable assessment. The app needs more user feedback.
This camera app captures reality in a mesmerizing display of intricate geometric pixelations, evoking a deeply satisfying sense of harmonious retrofuturism reminiscent of artistic styles found in 'Hyper Light Drifter' and geometric art styles found in the Cyberpunk genre.
There’s a descent amount of settings available to tweak the image to your desires, even allowing you to edit the RGB rule. Directional adjustments, resolution, brightness and image fidelity, and even a few color filters are all at your disposal, with rear and front camera access for both video recording and photography.
My only complaint is that I wish there was an option to edit photos from your library. Because of this, the app is limited to what you can capture in the moment, which severely limits its potential. A workaround is to take a picture of something from another screen, but that’s obviously a bit of a hassle.
Overall, this app is fantastic and a must-have for enthusiasts of pixel art, generative design, and mathematical aesthetics. I was looking for a tool that can offer geometric and symmetrical visuals, and it does just that, at a reasonable price. It’s refreshing to still see apps that don’t require monthly subscription fees.
A few features would make this app perfect
So far I have enjoyed using this app and Im very curious about its underlying mechanics.
That being said I would like to see some additions that can make the app easier to use as well as increase functionality.
-Ability to save rulesets as profiles to quickly switch between
- Fullscreen/ hide ui mode with tap to shoot/record
-Auto exposure toggle (Im not sure if this is possible)
Otherwise this app produces interesting results and runs extremely well with no lag
Love it!
Maybe this is the first app I've reviewed to praise instead of complain about 😂 i love it. Thank you!
Pretty cool
The only issue I have had is in the middle of trying to shoot a video or take a picture I get the prompt to rate the app. I don’t mind if that pops up on occasion, when an app first opens, but it happens two or three times during each use. The app is fabulous other than that. It could just be me, and I would never tell anyone not to get this app because of that. I do wish that it had audio for the videos, but that is not a dealbreaker. You get some very cool effects and I love the UI. I would love to be able to have audio with the videos, because the video effects would be great for some of the bands I am in. If you are interested in different camera affects that aren’t super trendy and a little more abstract you will definitely like this app. I love it…
Beautiful app
I love the style and the simple complexity of interface. would pay for an update that gives the ability to upload pics and videos from our from the camera library
Great retro-style effect not seen in other apps
I love the effects produced by this app. The biggest downside for me is it does not edit existing images, only images taken with the in-app camera. And the in-app cam might be improved with a manual focus-adjust input, since the blurriness of the image greatly effects how it will look after processing. If you’re looking to buy for video recording, please note that the video quality is noticeably less than still picture quality, and also that it takes some fiddling with to get the effect just right. There is no saving functionality when you get your settings just right. They need to be manually adjusted every time you start the app. Also, when video recording, the app does not stop your phone’s display from sleeping while recording, and the photos save to storage as ScreenShots. But still a very nice retro effect. Thanks.
Import gallery
It’s great for what it does but is missing import from gallery option.plz add importing from gallery
Uniquely Cool!
I’m really loving the effects you can get with this. Very unique. Lofi with an edge. Kinda glitch but with structure.
The exported resolution is decent too.
For creative play, highly recommended! :)
Powerful app
It is hard at first to see what controls what and if I change something, what effect I can get, but once you get it, you’ll know how powerful this app is
