Best app for managing your wine cellar
Rather frustrating and clunky app. Database search seems flawed. Wines quickly found using the Vivino app are not found when searching via this app, even though it is allegedly searching the same Vivino database.
This is actually a pretty good app, but scored only three because it won't open at all when offline. Need offline function if you want to look at 'My Cellar' when not connected.
This is a good app but one that could be so much better. Database is obviously considerably larger than Vivino or Delectable but the UI is very dated and clunky. No ability to slide between pages and when you scroll up and down, just touching the page to stop the scroll takes you into another page, just a bit irritating.
While the interface takes a bit of getting used to, you soon pick it up. The software quickly recognises the wines as you enter them in, or you can scan them in. Once entered it is easy to keep track and the programme reminds you if a wine is in its drinking window or needs drinking up. It tells you what you paid for it and it's current value. It is easy to search for a wine and most will have half a dozen non-professional reviews from enthusiasts who have recently drunk that particular wine and vintage which helps you decide whether to try one of your bottles or not. You can add your own public or private reviews to remind yourself of what you thought of a particular bottle. You can also link to a professional reviewer such as Jancis for extra reassurance when buying. I never buy wine now without checking on Cellar Tracker first. Highly recommended and not expensive.
Firstly there is no way of changing date format or currency symbol used, so you are left with US date and $. Navigation is dreadful, and after hours of using it I have discovered I can do most things, but finding the links to achieve something simple like amending the number of bottles of a particular wine in your cellar is non intuitive. Looking up by barcode and label is great for recent purchases, but it failed to identify about half of my 41 different wines. Although free it asks continually for donations, which I would do if it worked better, but not as it is.
Just like TripAdvisor for wine but much more reliable for ratings. Invaluable in terms of knowing when to open your aged bottles!
See ratings/reviews for 1.7m different wines. Rate and review wines you've tasted. Put your cellar online. Just brilliant.
I'm a big fan of the iPad companion app (vinopal). This is an app based version of the website. It could do with some optimisations - caching and so on. But it's a very good start and if you have a wine cellar with more than a few bottles, you need this app.
