Channels for HDHomeRun! Reviews

High costs plus monthly fees for DVR

Michael Emery on

New Zealand

The app generally works well, but will require an additional MONTHLY fee of $8 USD to use DVR features when they eventually become available in NZ. Many competing apps already provide DVR, and at no extra cost. DVR content is stored locally on your own network, so I don’t understand how this app can justify a subscription. The Apple TV app is a additional purchase, and is more expensive than the iOS version. TVNZ, TV3 and Al Jazeera all have really good apps for iOS and Apple TV, and they all allow you to watch previously screened programmes for free. I’m just not sure why you would pay the asking price for this app, as well as a subscription. Support from the developers is excellent. They published a fix to a minor bug I pointed out in less than one week.

High quality app

Jedmeister1235 on

New Zealand

So many things can go wrong with these types of apps but this works like a charm.... I am in New Zealand, with an hdhomerun dual (older version) and it picked up my Freeview channel list immediately and works great.... epg seems good too, kudos to the developers

Away from home home not reliable

dnelson763 on

United States

I’ve tried connecting the traditional way and I’ve tried Tailscale. It connects to the server and shows the tv guide and recordings but eventually I get “tuner unreachable” errors. Not sure it’s worth the $80 annual cost because of this. It defeats the benefit of using an expensive server.

Best DVR

sbuchart on

United States

Great live tv and DVR. Easy to use. Excellent for pulling many video sources together in one, easy too use package. Also like that videos can be downloaded to your device for travel, all inside one app.

Don’t upgrade to v5.8.0 - has a severe bug

mal_77 on

United States

After upgrading to v5.8.0 all channels receive connection lost and won’t play any live tv on the hdhomerun. I wish the developers would extensively tested new software before releasing it especially after I paid for the software

Exactly what a Live TV and DVR should be.

Jarbain on

United States

Have been using Channels DVR for a couple of years and the app functions exactly the way a Live TV and DVR app should be. It is extremely reliable and the developers are always quick to respond.

Tremendous front end for HDHomerun

terpene710 on

United States

I love this app so much, from the picture-in-picture mode, to the general quality of it as opposed to the native app, and also the ability to check the statistics of the channel I’m viewing. Truly the best experience for HDHomerun, I’ve also purchase the android version to use on my Shield Pro TV that also is my preferred method of viewing. Only recommendation doesn’t even concern this app, and would be to make an Xbox version but I’m completely understand if the user base isn’t there. Can’t say enough good things about this app, as well as the HDHomerun itself.

Audio on iOS 17

chinanderm on

United States

Ever since iOS 17 was released, 99% of the time, audio is unlistenable because it clips and cuts in/out. How has this not been fixed?

Top notch

First class HDHomeRun client.

Problems with IPhone 15 Pro Max & iOS 17.0.2

OWC Jamie on

United States

Have been a very happy user of Channels for many years, and unfortunately, there is a problem that has popped up with my new phone and the latest OS. There is significant audio clipping occurring when playing either locally on the phone, or when streamed to Bluetooth device. Hopefully this is easily remedied with an update to the app. :-)
