ChordBud 2 is a MIDI chord sequencer where you can create unique chord progressions very quickly.
It has a very powerful music theory engine under the hood with +40 scales. You can select the scales you want to work with and see them from top to bottom on one screen. From left to right, you can see the chords inside those scales. You can either compare the scales or borrow chords (modal interchange) from each other!
By default, it presents all the chords inside a scale for the key you are working with which you may change at any time. But in the settings menu, you can also select the chord progression you want to work with and you can see the chords in the progression.
You can work with as many patterns as you want! You can set different keys, scales, and chord progressions for each pattern. You can copy/paste/delete them by long-pressing them. Patterns are triggerable with the MIDI CC messages. You can build automation or create a song mode with that powerful feature.
You are not limited to just the triad chords! The powerful music theory engine lets you modify your chords with add/sus/6/7/9/11/13 and more chord mods! After adding a chord to your timeline, just tap it to present the chord editor. You may change the chord mode, velocity, octave, inversion, key, and division of the chord. You can make your edits while the sequencer is playing, so you can hear your changes immediately while you are working.
In the timeline, you can move your chords to change their position. Also, you can drag them from their right edge to change their duration. You can pinch to zoom in or out in the timeline. If you want to position your chords more precisely, you can zoom in and work in the subdivisions.
ChordBud 2 offers its core components for free on Github. You can fork them to create your own music app! The standalone app's MIDI layer is powered by the open-source AudioKit framework.

ChordBud 2 AUv3 MIDI Sequencer Reviews
Much better than the original.
I bought this earlier today because I saw that it was an auv3 and I could use it in AUM. I’ve just used it to create a chord sequence and I’m very impressed with how easy it is to use. I’ve also found out that this app works in Beatmaker 3 as well so that’s an unexpected bonus for me.
Outstanding
I have spent my first day working with this app and the related Rhythm Bud (auv3) and I am astounded how productive both units are. The music theory engine in ChordBud is comprehensive, accessible and the creative possibilities are immense. This app will definitely increase and improve my work flow.
In my opinion this app fills a massive resource void in the AUV3 world. In the first 25 minutes of use I had created an expressive Legato string section without the need to access an external sequencer or port material in from my computer.
If I had wish it would be the possibility of importing a midi track such as a piano motif so that a chord accompaniment could be created in a single environment. So developer thanks for all the hard work this a winner with legs 🙏🦄🎩🎹
All the Best LImbic
Awesome!!
Another great App from this excellent developer. Super fast response to email question and it was fixed in the next update!
We are so lucky on ios to have devs like this - many thanks!
Missing Time Signature
How do you setup time signatures like 3/4, 6/8, etc. ?
It doesn’t start playing on the 1st beat in Cubasis
Suggestion: Add a manual option to turn on/off Sync with the Host because the auto-syncing in the code isn’t functioning correctly.
The pointer that tracks where it’s playing never returns all the way to the beginning of the track when I use Rewind to Start in the Host Transporter.
This is a serious bug. Please fix this. This app used to work correctly, as shown in Leo’s 3 year old Tutorial. But now, it doesn’t work like that anymore.
Really love this app
I have all the chord apps. This is the most intuitive and easy to use . Love using it with brain and bounce bud
Class A sequencer from The Classiest Developer, in the iOS. Period.
Read the title!
A simple fix pls
please allow us to play our own chords in by hand instead of choosing the technical terms.
It'd make fun a lot more accessible 🙏
Tutorial doesn’t work
Start using it with the tutorial? Well, you get to the second balloon, and that’s where the tutorial stops working. “Let’s select one chord and start!” But while you can select one chord, or as many as you want, you can’t go any further. The balloon is supposed to be your “Next” button, but it’s dead—you can’t get past it, it does not work.
Chord options are still limited
Still lacking simple functions like omitting fifths, or adding specific notes/intervals to a chord.
You can get some great use out of this app if you’re using simple chord symbols (stuff like 7, M7, add9, sus4, 6/9, b11, etc.) but you can’t, for example, play any of these chords without the fifth, or without the third. You can’t play jazzy/bluesy chords that are difficult to define, either. There are all sorts of chords that are impossible to generate with traditional chord notation, and so it’s disappointing to see these left out.
Please add an “omit X interval” function for each chord.
Also, rhythm is very limited and almost non-functional. You can split chords into very large chunks, but there’s really no way to divide into 1/16ths or triplets or anything of that nature.
Overall, great for quick sketches and simple grooves, but unable to create anything more complex.
