色盲是指缺乏或完全没有辨别色彩的能力。通常说的色盲多是指红绿色盲。面对五色缤纷的世界，人们到底是如何感知它的呢？原来在人的视网膜上有一种感光细胞——锥细胞，它有红、绿、蓝3种感光色素。每一种感光色素主要对一种原色光产生兴奋，而对其余两种原色光产生程度不等的反应。如果某一种色素缺乏，则会产生对此种颜色的感觉障碍，表现为色盲或色弱（辨色力弱）。色盲又分许多不同类型，仅对一种原色缺乏辨别力者，称为单色盲，如红色盲，又称第一色盲，比较多见；绿色盲，称为第二色盲，比第一色盲少些；蓝色盲，即第三色盲，比较少见。如果对两种颜色缺乏辨别力者，称为全色盲，较为罕见。色盲多为先天性遗传所致，少数为视路传导系统障碍所致。一般是女性传递，男性表现。根据统计，男性色盲发病率为5%，而女性则为1%。有先天性色觉障碍者，往往不知其有辨色力异常，多为他人觉察或体检时发现。凡从事交通运输、美术、化学、医药等工作人员必须有正常的色觉，因此，色觉检查就成为服兵役、就业、入学前体检时的常规项目。
