Amazing game. Just needs enough improvements to pay homage to Comix Zone.
I know the game is as great as the developers say it really is and on that I personally couldn’t agree more. They just need to make enough improvements to pay homage to Comix Zone. If there’s more than one thing I personally believe the developers can do to prove just that they should put in a opening introduction to the game so that everytime players load up the game they can see something similar to Comix Zone itself. Another thing I had in mind is interactions between the four characters like comicboy and parkourgirl talking about how they got into the comic book and what they should do to celebrate once they finally escape from the comic book. And one last thing I had in mind is that upon completing all the other levels there should be a level where comicboy confronts the alien blob like creature that brought him into the comic book world and upon defeating it he and his friends are sent back to the real world. Message to the developers: if this advice helps out I sincerely you give you a shot. Thank you and good night.
Do not waste your time
It is bad
Why is this Featured?
This game is a nice concept. It sounds cool to control a character inside a comic. But the execution is extremely poor. It’s like a very early alpha of a game, but doesn’t have any sort of polish. It’s repetitive and the controls are not all that great. I don’t normally write bad reviews like this, but since Apple featured this app for some reason I decided to check it out only to be pretty disappointed. Hopefully the developers see these reviews and improve the game. It could be really good, but it’s just not there yet.
Comic boy
This game is great fun and a clever homage to classic old school comic strips from the papers.
Cool Concept - Needs Tweeks
(Review Updated)
It’s kind of disappointing because somewhere in this app is a fun, creative game wanting to break free. But it’s held back by —
A.) I don’t care if it was an attempt at a homage or not - The main character looks too close to Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes to be acceptable!
Buuuut that said, other issues are:
B.) The obnoxious, unbearably annoying rock music...
EDIT: Fixed! Great work! The new music fits in very smoothly with the levels now and is no longer distracting. Made the game MUCH more playable and —along with the simplistic gameplay— dare I say, relaxing! The added mute button is appreciated too.
However, if you’re not looking for a potentially relaxing game:
C.) The gameplay and levels themselves really lack energy. The game honesty looks great visually with smooth character animations, but actually gets pretty boring and mindless once you start playing it. Just run through the panel. Pick up collectibles. Duck. Jump. Done. Incorporating some more variety, such as an attack move that can be performed against enemies (as opposed to just jumping over everything) could possibly fix this problem.
The controls need to be a little more responsive too. And the menus need to be more user friendly (Add a “restart level” button!)
The concept is really cool though, and if these features of the game were fixed (with a new main character and more fun and engaging levels) it would be awesome!
Pretty but poor platformer gameplay
I was drawn to this game for its art style but can’t get past the poor gameplay. It looks like a side-scrolling endless runner crossed with a platformer, reminding me of games like Nitrome’s Leap Day, but the control responsiveness and physics are off. So for example, the first character has a roll move that allows you to dodge under hanging obstacles. However, this dodge has a tightly predefined distance, so the character pops up immediately upon completion. That’s fine in a game with stationary objects, like most endless runners, but here there are objects that move. That means you can easily find yourself in situations that are unwinnable, e.g., if you are moving in the same direction as a swinging platform that you need to dodge under, because you run a little slower than the swing, your only option is to dodge under it (limited distance) or jump over it (finicky hit box). Combine that with limited lives and an unskippable countdown timer after losing 3 lives, and you have a lot of unnecessary and repetitive frustration. There are also odd choices for the physics; for example, your character typically sails through the air when jumping in a slow arc yet if you walk off of a ledge, you drop literally straight down like a rock, and at a FASTER rate than you fall in jumps! That just makes no sense at all; the game does not consistently apply its own physics, which for a platformer, for me, is the kiss of death.
Love it
This game is fun
Makes me crazy
Concept is top notch
Problem is the control gestures are so unusual and create an anti flow of physical movement of your hand,it takes all the fun out of the game.
A true review of the game
I don’t understand why so many people hate on the game for the character. So many other games and movies reference other games and characters and pay homage to them, and we all laugh and enjoy it. It gives a more fun feel when we can connect to a character or compare it to something else.
Just because something looks similar to something else does not mean that it is plagiarizing or stealing, and besides, in what other ways does this character resemble Calvin, besides some similar appearances.
The game reviews are supposed to be based on how enjoyable the game is and whether it’s worth playing. :) so if you want a real, honest review of the game, read on.
I think the game is fun. There’s a few bugs here and there, but it’s an exciting game and full of surprises. I love how you have each level not the same every single time you retry. It makes for a ever changing game and no rote ness to the game. I really enjoy the various bosses and their challenges and appearances that startle me every time. The deaths of the characters are fairly hilarious. The platforming of the characters is pretty good quality, but like some have said, some things aren’t the most clear. For instance, I wasn’t aware for a while that you could slam on other creatures to get ink, and then also which creatures I could slam and which I can’t. I also didn’t know that having so much ink could function as a Star from Mario, making you invincible. I also didn’t realize the way to escape the blob monster for quite a while as it wasn’t clear. Perhaps you could include the monster in some sort of intro level where you teach the person what you need to do. Either way, trying to escape that blob monster makes things fun. :)
In my opinion, there are some things that you could improve upon, if you developers read this. For one, I would really appreciate a restart level button in the pause menu, rather than going back to the menu and back into the level. For convenience sake, it would be easier. I also dont like how sometimes you slam through the bones into the water of the ice and beach worlds, making it impossible to slam down. It also would be nice if the brains speech bubble above the zombies could be made clear that it isn’t a monster that you have to avoid. Also, when you have an object on the edge of a wall, and you have to double jump to avoid hitting the object to turn around, it’s rather difficult to do for the character because of the wall, it feels a bit clumsy. Perhaps you could hav
