Description

cykle is an inventive, semi-generative melodic step sequencer for iOS, iPadOS and Mac (Catalyst). cykle abstracts every musical parameter into its own sequence using decoupled sequencer lanes, producing complex and musically engaging patterns from the interactions between simple elements.
nb: cykle does not make sound by itself, you will need to connect it to a MIDI-compatible synthesizer app on your device, load it in an AUv3-compatible host (such as Logic Pro, Audiobus or AUM), or connect it to an external synthesizer, computer or any other MIDI-compatible sound generating device.
features:
- universal app (works on both iPhone and iPad)
- works in both portrait and landscape mode
- works as an Audio Unit (AUv3) MIDI plugin or as a standalone (CoreMIDI) app
- sample-accurate sequencing engine
- slick and responsive native UI
- pattern snapshots selectable via MIDI input
- song mode / pattern chaining
- pitch playable by MIDI note input (arp and chord modes)
- configurable tempo, scale and key
- every channel can be routed to a separate MIDI destination and channel
- every channel sends MIDI note- and pitch-bend data as well as an arbitrary number of MIDI continuous control (CC) messages
- full AUv3 state- and preset-saving
- randomization features
- save and load patterns
- decoupled sequencer lanes for the following parameters:
- pulse
- pitch
- rest
- step length
- chance
- velocity
- accent
- gate length
- chance
- ratchet (note repeat)
- accidental (flatten/sharpen)
- transpose
- chord inversion
- octave
- harmonize
- pitch bend
- mappable MIDI CC values (e.g., filter cutoff, resonance, envelope, etc.)
sequences can be instantly transformed by the following actions:
- shift left/right/up/down
- rotate
- randomize
- mutate
- mirror
- reverse
- double
- bisect
- configurable clock division rate per sequencer lane
- configurable playback mode per sequencer lane (forward, backward, random, jump)
- MIDI clock output
- Ableton Link support
- works without internet connection
- no push notifications
- no ads or in-app purchases
- no third-party behavioural tracking tools
- ongoing development and support

Endless fun

I’m amazed how much this little sequencer can add to a track. Well thought out and easy to use. I just hope this app lasts well into the future with updates.

Should/Will be 5 stars when critical bug is quashed

MusixMonkey on

For some reason, the section of the settings menu that controls input method (arp, chord) and midi channel don’t remember settings. Open plugin, set output channel to 3. Close plugin. Open plugin and channel is back to 1. 😠 This is a critical error/bug if you can’t route multiple instances. Fix this and it’s a 10 star app.

Want to love, but

This app does what no other app does, but in its current version it is unusable. In stand alone mode it cannot connect to any other app. As soon as you open another app the play head will no longer move. It also won’t see any other app as a MIDI destination. I have yet be be able to get it to play a synth and I have tried a few. This leaves AUM. Inside AUM, it does work until you turn on Ableton link. After that, Cykle never knows where the start of the bar is and will start at an interval based on the play head position rather then at the next bar. Because Cycle has know idea where the start is, it never plays at the right time. This means that the only way cycle is usable is inside a host with Ableton link turned off. But if you want to us another app that requires Ableton link, you are out of luck.

Cool app but

This is a really great start with two caveats: first, it does not appear to have a slave mode to a daw (other than ableton link) this may be a limitation of the iPad and not the developer, not sure. Second, for editing lanes like velocity, I have to tap each step to set the value. It needs to support catching the values with a finger drag.

New favorite sequencer

Love this app, it was just the sort of sequencer I was looking for! Very fun to use, makes it easy to create non-repeating patterns yet with control over the overall mood. The recent update is awesome, thanks for that! Great work.

pretty good start

But please include the ability to have rests and chromatic and many other scales. Poly chord arp, imaginando, and riffer have great examples of scale ideas. Thanks
